Bloody Land Rover Steering

I know when they are well fettled they are ok but by Christ do
they take some fettling!
New smaller wheels have highlighted the worn steering box. Nice
and light right in the middle but then git tight at any sort of
lock. Already replaced the relay, the ball joints, checked the
swivels all ok but bunged a bit of extra grease on the pins, it
wasn't too bad after all that but now this wear to the box is
doing my nut in! I'm not good enough to recon it, a new one is
like fucking £350 and I don't know how to get the old one off
(wing off job I assume) and I don't want the bugger off the road
as it is my daily drive.

Series 3 box here in Holmfirth if you want it (just got to find

Not too tricky to change, but you do need a drop arm remover
handy before you start.

Alex that is a very kind offer. I'm going to be cheeky and ask
if you would be prepared to put it on a courier if I made it
well worth your while? Don't want to be a PITA.
Lucy can you give me a brief sort of run down of the order of
the job? E.g. Like:
Remove wing, remove this, remove that four bolts and Robert is
your Mothers Brother sort of thing?
Is a drop arm remover a specific tool or is it just a ball joint
splitter?

steering wheel off, undo all bracketry in dash (PITA) bolts on
the bulkhead (lots and covered in crap, battery tray off (to be
easier), remove the bottom lin arm from the bottom of the
column. (big bolt that needs removing completely then the arm
prising off - similar to the one on top of the relay) which
might / probably will need a puller (HNC engineering do one over
on series 2 club and on ebay but you won't like the price)
I can wrap it up in plastic and stick an address label on it so
you can arrange collection on Monday . Let you know when I have
found it.

this is the drop arm puller i made a while ago - basically an
old bit of plate cut to fit over the lugs and a tapped thread
for a bolt to push with. picture shows it being used on a rover
p4 arm, but you get the idea.

Silly question, but did you did fill the relay with oil when you
changed it didn't you? I had a series 3 get really heavy over a
couple of weeks and it was just down to the relay having no oil
in it. :haha:

Aye I did but its never daft to ask. Original one was bone dry
when I got it. but then so was the steering box...
Come to mention it so was everything else!
