Always fancied having a go at this but never got around to it. I
know there's a few on here that take part in these shinannigans,
any tips for getting involved?

Find your local Land Rover club that is a member of the ALRC
(association) and join up and get involved. When you find them
just check they have involvement in trials. When you first go to
one you should be well looked after and will probably be offered
a ride in with someone. If you google ALRC they have a list of
all the clubs on their site.

I am in NERO or or North East Rover Owners. A lot of the members
seem to be in my area. Had been looking at the Yorkshire club
but at the time their site was down and the members are further
from me. NERO xmas do is 20 mins walk from my house.

^ As above and get watching or marshalling for a few events.
You'll hopefully see that about 99% of what most people consider
useful off road driving techniques means pretty much zippo dippo
on a proper trial section.
The biggest thing vehicle wise is tyres and (always a problem)
steering lock!

Been to a few P and D trials around 2005/06 (hadn't long had the
truck) and it was quite good as a spectator. Small but friendly
group. The website was quite dead back then too as I think it
was more based on real life rather than internet. Always ment
to actully have a go one day but having a truck without
seatbelts is a no no, and I didn't want to overly risk damaging
the station wagon anyway. Since then life has sort of got in
the way with time and money so I've not been back, would like to
though - let me know if you go to one - I used to just turn up
and people were friendly (calender is probubly nearly done for
the year though).
I really should have had a go when I had that Tdi'd 2A but as
ever it was he front line work truck at the time that I didn't
want to expose to maintinance increaseing risks.

Lucy I'm not 100pc who I know as I am terrible with names and
haven't been around very long yet.
Which is P and D? Don't think iv heard of that.

I used to be a member here a long time ago. Everything was very

Hi Lucy
Yes some of the club sites are prety crud, but usually they are
there just to provide contact details.
P&D are from my understanding a good long standing club. Blimey
just lookad their websitee, thats worse than the Yorkshire site!
The most common trial for starters are the Road Taxed Vehicle
Trials "RTV". In general these cater for general standard
vehicles. To get playing the vehicle usually requires little
modification.
The most important of these are:
- Most critically a 2nd throttle return spring situated as close
to the throttle linkage on the carb / injector pump as possible.
This is to try ensure the engine returns to idle in case of any
problems
- Seat belts / lap straps even on vehicles that do not legally
require them
- Some clubs like to see a front recovery point, this could be D
rings, a front towball etc. Though I have trialled with a tow
rope attached via the front PTO hole.
- A good quality tow rope just in case
- Rear recovery point, usually a standard towbar
- Some clubs require a fire extinguisher in each vehicle
Most of these are for safety/recovery just in case.
In reality an RTV trial should be non damaging. The idea is to
travel as far as possible along a route set out over difficult
terrain via a series of numbered gates without either hitting a
gate or stopping.
The gates start at 12 and count down to 1.
The drivers get the opportuninty to walk the section before
driving to assess the obstacles, then one chance at driving it.
If you stop befor the end then you are penalised by accumulating
the number of points as defined by the next gate in the sequnce
that you have not reached. E.g. if you get through the gate
marked 5 without touching it but stop forward movement, possibly
stuck in a hole, then you are marked as receiving a 4.
If you hit a gate, say touch one or other of the canes of the 5
gate then you get a 5
If you traverse the course without stopping or hitting a get
then you get what is called a clear or 0
This route is called a section and a trial will consist of a
number of sections, it usually depends how many vehicles are
entered as to how many sections are run in aday
The idea is to get as few penalty points as possible.
It is a great day out, most clubs are very sociable
In your part of the world there are also Lincs LRC,
Leicestershire & Rutland, Peak & Dukeries, possibly Midland ROC
These are all "Association of Land Rover Clubs" or ALRC clubs

which is a Motorsport governing body.
There are also a number of other non ALRC LR clubs, some of
these have left or splintered from the ALRC as they did not like
the strict rules. then there are all mark 4x4 clubs.
I personally prefer the ALRC despite some of its frustrating
regs, looking at the oter clubs there RTVs tend to be more
extreme and definatly non damaging.
That said, it IS motorsport, and accidents CAN happen.
