Bonnet Mounted Spare

Ay Up,
Could anyone with a spare on their bonnet please post up their
opinions on what they are like to drive with please, any info
you think is relevant to someone thinking of doing the same?
I'm thinking of putting on one a deluxe bonnet that isn't dished
with 205 tyres.

We run about with a 235 on the bonnet no problems.

I think you'll get two schools of thought here - one saying it
obscures your view so is a safety hazard, the other saying
that's how they were designed.
We have 7.50s on the bonnets of our Carawagons, though they are
on dished bonnets.
There's no room to put a spare inside a Carawagon, and as they
are already heavily loaded, putting it on the back doesn't
really help the rear springs :-?
Personally, I've never had a problem seeing, apart from low
speed maneuvering in tight spaces where you can't easily see the
left front corner. You just take a bit more care!
I certainly don't feel it obscures my view to any great extent
out on the road.

Thanks that was a great answer.
I have heard that it makes the ride smoother to have it inside
or on the back.
Anyone have any experience of this?

I run an 88 on 205s. It has the dished bonnet and I have no
vision problems with the spare mounted on it.
I only put the spare on the bonnet when I need load space inside
(normally I carry 2 spares in the back bolted together ).
Biggest problem with bonnet mounted spare is opening the bonnet.
Even bigger problem is when you work on the motor and nudge the
stay and the lot comes down on your head. Dont ask how I know
this.

Any one a pick of how it's mounted?
I have the round thing on my bonnet and one hook thingy, but I
can't realy see how (with an extra hook thingy) I should fit it
???

That's why I have a length of steel tube (actually an old tent
pole) as a second prop - sits nicely on top of the front panel.
Oh, and I find bending my knees and pushing the bonnet up is a
lot easier than standing in front and trying to lift it!
I learnt that on Patrick's Carawagon - a Michelin 7.50 XZY 14
ply regroovable tyre is a heavy beast!

I just moved Wagons spare onto the bonnet - I've the dished
luxury bonnet, and the insa turbo 7.50, about the same size as a
235/85. Its quite tough to get the wheel clips down enough to
get a lock through the locking post.
it made no difference to the handling, and I got used to it
quite quickly when driving. I could still see the nearside wjng
top if I shuffled round a bit.

I've two vehicles with bonnet mounted spares, 6.50 and 235. Not
an issue as far as I'm concerned. Initially it might take some
getting used to I suppose but overall I find it the best option.
No loss of space in the back, no knackered door hinges, no loss
of access to the rear hitch, no weight high up on a roof-rack.
Downsides are the requirement to man up a bit when lifting the
bonnet and the requirement to look ahead properly when driving.

^^^ I'd say the same. The 88 has a 255/85R16 on the bonnet,
military dished one with strap and the ambulance a slightly
smaller 235/85R16. Yes, they do reduce the low down forward
visibility a bit but I can't say I notice particularly over the
109 without one.
What makes a big difference is the condition of the drivers seat
base. New foam makes you sit a good few inches higher compared
to knackered foam, both the 88 and ambulance have new seat
cushions.
