One for you to ponder, valuation

Hi all
One for you knowledgable sorts to set the brain cells to work
on. Was at a mate of mines place on Friday and saw his fathers
latest purchase, a 1979 S3 LWB 6 cylinder.....
With 63 miles on the clock from new!!! :giddy:
It runs, the interior is amazing and still smells of new. All
the paperwork is there and correct. Unfortunately the exterior
is not great, the previous owner didn't try to store it very
well and there are some bits of ally bubbling comign through and
the bulkhead has a fair bit of surface rust.
Now, they are not really quite sure what to do with it - is
originality better and try not to do anything to it or do you
respray etc etc and all the other options in between? I think
they feel if there is a good place (museum etc) where it might
be best homed then they would happily move it over to someone
who could use it to its best advantage.
I don't know what they paid for it but I have a strong suspicion
it would be under what it is worth. Where do you begin?

Probably be best using a waxyoil just to stop further corrosion,
as you say it could really do with being in a museum by the
sound of it?? Dunsfold?

a 1978 S3 with 10K miles from new sold for about £12K on ebay
not long ago.

I guess it depends what they really want Land Rover wise. The
key here is once they start faffing with it the value will
almost certainly go down unless it really is a professional job.
Sounds to me like the sort of thing that would get a decent
paint job (or at least sympathetic touch up) to make the outside
match the rest of it for condition and be flogged off for 5
figures by someone like the LRC.
If its a six cylinder utility 109 series 3 it really is (sadly)
at the lowest end of series pricing but I think it's fair to say
it would certainly fetch a few quid. If I owned it I'd move it
on for a more than excessive price tag, and reinvest that into
something I'd want to use.
Dunsfold do seem to help with selling notable vehicles on to
good homes, perhaps a call to them would be a good place to
start. It'd be my first port of call.

Thanks guys. Meant to say it is a station wagon.
No pictures at the moment but in due course I will see what I
can do. I had a feeling that the more original the better
really, its such a shame the paint is really not doing it any
favours in places.

I really think this will be worth a fair amount if sold to a
collector, don't let them spoil it, i would be tempted to ask
about light restoration prices from Dunfold with a view to
moving it on to a collector for a nice profit, or even just move
it on as is.
