Anybody know about International Harvester tractors?

       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hey up!
Requesting a bit of info for a neighbour, here...and I reckon
there are anoraks enough on here to satisfy my enquiry.
As well as a couple of Fergies, my man has recently acquired an
IH 724, which he got for a bit of a steal really, which was
always going to indicate issues a bit more than the tatty cabin
and need for a lighting re-wire.
Taking the tin-work off to give it a good service before he put
it to work, he discovered why the steering felt a little
sloppy...the casting at the steering box mounts (integral to the
unit) has cracked on both sides.
Personally, I reckon there must be at least one agricultural
mechanic around here who can fix it with some expert metal glue
action on the iron, but my pal seems resigned to the fact that
he will have to buy another.
So, my question is this - Would this steering box (very early
70s manufacture) be model exclusive or is it likely to be
generic parts bin stuff for other 2wd/non-PAS IH tractors of the
era? I'm inclined to think the latter, personally, with the 724
being larger than the cab-less 624 only in engine horses and
       height.
If anybody would happen to know for sure and, better still, have
a part number, it may make finding a replacement easier.
       Ta, in tractorness.

       Cheers Dave.
If he happens to have a saleable one lying about, my good man
next door wouldn't mind a price.

I have a 1957 IH B250 tractor with a lifter and rear forks - we
use it daily once we've started the bvgger!
one of the handy things about old tractors is that the vast
majority of parts are still available, old tractors are still
pretty popular as they were made to be nigh on indestructible
unlike the modern ones which are the typical pile of monkey jizz
that makes the Chooky Embra drop faux pas.
Typically parts searching tends to be easy - any classic tractor
mag will point you in the right direction, fleabay helps -
having said that as you will see from my other thread I'm
looking for a starter motor at an affordable price as parts can
be quite costly, but then again, this is the first motor it has
needed in around 57 years so cant complain!
