Carburettor dilemma
DIR By: Alien

Hi all
I have a question for the technically minded.
My zenith carb is dying (it's done 90000 miles). The play in the
butterfly shaft means the fueling is all over the place.
Now the options as I see them are as follows
1) replace with a new zenith off the bay of e (not a crap copy)
2) rebuild my own with kit from bay of e (worried about crap
parts)
3) replace with a weber (downsides, icing and clogging up)
4) replace with a su carb conversion (bloody expensive)
The Landy also has LPG fitted which I want to keep.
The truck doesn't do high mileage anymore, just some laning,
playing in the snow and showing those round sprung perverts how
it's done at a few days out.
Any advice from the assembled experts will be helpfull.

Where are you ? I have bored and bushed several carb bodies over
the years, most time the brass spindle survives and a new
aluminium bush is all that is needed.

Alien, If you can not get sorted get in touch. I can not promise
that it is repairable but could be posted if needed.
I am in South Staffs not far from Lichfield/Burton on Trent.
Regards Chris.

I've had both Zenith and Weber (plus a Solex on a motor some
many moons back) and I've no recollection of 'icing and
clogging' with a Weber...which isn't to say it can't happen.
Carbs polarize people like politics, and they all have their +
and - points. But you've hit the nail squarely with your remarks
about 'crap copy' and 'crap parts', both of which will have you
blaming the make of carb rather than, correctly, a bad example
or shit components.
A well set and clean 34ICH Weber will serve you just as well as
the lionised Zenith; so if you can get original examples of
either, do so. And by the same token, a good overhaul kit,
applied with patience and due care, will do you wonders and
leave you feeling well-satisfied.
The SU conversion...Yeah! But again, nail and head.

Are you sure it's play in the butterfly shaft? The O-ring
between the emulsion block and the float chamber casting gets
brittle with age (particularly if the chamber is often dry, as
it is when running LPG) which leads to the float chamber leaking
down the throat and giving you over rich mixtures.
These can be sourced for pennies.
The overhaul kits are not too bad; I've done a few, both with
Genuine LR and Britpart items, and never had any issues.

Funnily enough I had the camera in my hand at the weekend when I
started the lightweight and lo and behold it started spluttering
after running for a short time then cut out. Just before it
finally died I snapped this...

...the much fabled Weber 34ICH icing. At least you get the idea
from the outside icing. I'm not one to disagree with Drew but I
have a feeling this varies motor to motor, some do it and some
don't. I've never had any luck with 34ICHs, I bought this one
new over ten years ago for the 2a 109 but the constant stalling
on cold mornings pissed me off so I went on to a new genuine
Zenith. It only ended up on the lightweight so it would run and
does the same thing.
If you're running LPG Alien then the carb really doesn't matter,
I've got LPG through a Zenith on the 109 and ACR SU set up on
the 88. The 88 goes better but it's a 2.5, stage 2 head, BLOS
LPG carb rather than a mixer etc etc.
If you want a brand new carb then don't overlook the Weber
32/34DMTL as fitted to boingys with the 2.25 and 2.5. Keith Gott
seems to have a stock and is flogging them on t'bay at present.
You'll need boingy manifolds and to adapt to a cable throttle,
and faff with the downpipe but as an SU owner I can say I don't
think the ACR kit is anywhere near worth the money. I got mine
much cheaper used.

Other than that, good advice from Drew and Doug I'd say.
Personally I'd be spending my money on a BLOS for gas and
overhauling the Zenith if it's not too shagged.

I am with Alien on throttle body wear, it shags up the fueling
big time. I have bushed carbs on all sorts of cars and tractors
even lawn mowers. The mowers usually require an oversize spindle
as there is not enough metal round them to take a bush. Majority
of time only the linkage side needs doing.

Thanks for the replies
I'll have to remove the carb on the weekend to have a proper
look at the shaft (also changing engine mountings, exhaust
brackets and gearbox gaiters). It beats watching tv on a
Saturday night.
I don't use it enough to change to the twin choke at the moment
(though always fancied having a Landy with 2 twin 40 webers
bolted on it, if it's possible) but that's another project.
Never heard of the blos LPG carb. But I'll be looking into it
now.
Divie. Thanks for the offer to have a look at my carb. If it
looks repairable I'll be in touch.

If you go to eBay and search "BLOS LPG" a couple of sellers come
up, one links to the PDF manual.
