109 rear crossmember
DIR By: Nono

So a tree has decided to show me how rotten the rear crossmember
is on my 109 :banghead
So before MOT time (next February) I need to replace it.
Since this chassis is and always will be a patchwork I does not
have to be the neatest job but I do want to check If I make
sense.
I want to buy a crossmember from padocks with extensions.
Cut off the old one with the rear tub in place.
Bolt the new one on with the tabs on the back.
Weld it on the sides and the botom.
Leave it as is for the remainder of winter.
And finish it in summer when I have the time and space (outside)
to finish the job, removing the body and welding the top.
Any big faults in my plan? :smilewide:

Yes. By leaving the top open and unwelded, you are going to
allow all sorts of shit to enter the rails and rot away your
hard work before you have finished it.

A number of the old wrecks I've had have had this done by POs (
and riggers they've left the top unwelded )..... as a temporary
bodge it's survived ok, in order to keep the motor usable, I
have ,as you envisage, subsequently done the full welding
'properly' when opportunity arose..
you can always spray a load of underseal type shit over the
unwelded 'seams' to keep some of the crud out in the meantime !
Despite the slight 'defeatist' nature of this approach, if it
keeps your motor operational, I'd go for it ! ;-)

If you're going to tow or pull anything with the Landy - yes. If
not, no. As far as I'm concerned, for what it's worth :-)

Thanks for all the tips, only towing light trailers with canoes
or light MG's no big and heavy stuff
But I have had a small rethink
Could I weld the top of the rail from below and then close the
bottom rail afterwards?

I suppose you could. The crossmembers with extensions I've seen
have an open bottom anyway, so it's certainly feasible. That
should make it strong enough, then do the top in the good
weather for corrosion resistance etc. Personally I prefer
welding the sides with the tub undisturbed anyway so you get
perfect alignment rather than pull the tub off and faff about
measuring etc.

Yes, I've done this on a Carawagon where removal of the body is
just a bit more complicated than normal :rolleye0012:
Another way some folk have done it is to cut sections out of the
floor, plating over with aluminium sheet riveted into place
afterwards.
Cheers,
Robin.

I took the floor out when I put a new half chassis on the 88.

And on the 109 I took the tub off and made a wooden jig before
cutting the cross member off.

Nice to see the creativity going on with the replacements.
I think I have enough inspiration to move forward now!
Let's order the metal bits and >rock<
