I have now put a gear lever on the box I bought from DaveH and
although all other gears are possible, first eludes me.
Which bit do I adjust to sort please?
Photos would be helpful, or a clue from Lucy's gearbox post
       thanks

I'm not aware of any real adjustment. If you can get 2nd i can't
see why you'd not be able to get first.

There's a long screw with a locknut that controls the height of
the reverse gate flap on the selectors. If you look, you'll see
it also controls where the gear lever sits when it's in the
1st/2nd position. Try adjusting the screw whilst gently holding
the gear lever against the flap, so the lever sits nicely in the
1st/2nd selector and isn't trying to operate the one beside it.

Wear on the selector ring/fork? Possibly more on 1st than on 2nd
side of the hub, causing it to jump back on the detent spring?

       Thanks all
As Lucy says, if I can get 2 why not 1. I perservered and all 5
gears are possible. Perhaps the reluctance was due to sitting on
a cold garage flloor for a year or two

When I got my 80 you could only get third and reverse, once it
had warmed through and had some fresh oil through it it was
       fine.

First is a separate, straight cut gear. You may need to rotate
input shaft a little to get it to line up, as it will need to be
pretty much in line to engage.

Could perhaps be the baulk ring jamming up a bit, assuming it's
       a series 3 box.

Thanks for the help. I turned the input shaft while going from
second to first and it plopped no probs. I will be sticking it
on the end of the engine once I have put the clutch on
