Whats the worst that could happen?

I think my reverse gate spring or springs have broken or fallen
off.
Other than accidentally selecting reverse instead of 1st gear
what’s the worst that could happen?
I'm thinking I can carry on driving until I can obtain
replacement springs?

Just be careful, the box I just rebuilt was in very good
condition but the gate spring was missing, the only issue was
the reverse idler which had 2 chipped teeth I assume as a result
of the broken gate.
My guess is the spring which gets stretched the most has snapped
allowing the gate to sit open, if you swap the remaining spring
the stretchiest position the gate should close and still work
just it will be slightly easier to push past.

Prescilla's were like that when I got it, to which the bloke
tried bluffing his case claiming 'All these old Land Rovers are
like that' Just a bit sloppy trying to find the 'ole (ooo err
missus). When I was wanting first I always selected second then
slipped it into first.

^^ As Stuey says - still quite driveable if you adapt by going
for second before slotting up into first. Mine has a detent but
I've driven at least 3 without one, and though it's a bit of a
ballache at first you do get used to it after a bit. Once
re-familiarised, you can probably find first directly again -
Edwin Foden of this 'ere parish once told me he soon mastered
doing so with his when he bought it like that (having let me
have a go in it and watched me fail miserably at it).
It also helps if you are lucky enough to have an identifying
mark or feature on the dash to line the gearlever knob up with
(ie. in mine, I could use the aux gauges to judge how far to
move the lever across. If, say, you had an S1 or S1 you could
pencil a couple of marks onto the dash shelf.)

Yup that D suffix 2A box n the racer lost it's reverse gate
spring long before I got it and I've never really felt like
putting it right as if you look at the layout in the box going
into 2nd before 1st as you're about to set off if I remember
correctly (or could be talking bobbins here) was somehow better
for what was on the shaft but can't remember why.
Either way it's never given me any bother. That said my
gearlever is 2 of them welded together to bring the reach over
to the drivers side more (handy when strapped in tight)

i have broken 2 reverse gates now, even the branded land rover
part that you can buy is made of cheese ( and cost a kings
ransom for what it is )
More trouble than they are worth imho, as when they break the
spring(s) that pull it shut tend to twist the whole assemly
forward, partially selecting reverse & generally making it
quite hard to select any gear at all!.
removing sections of floor tunnel in tescos carpark in the
pissing rain at night = not much fun. after it died for the
second time i removed the blasted thing
if you remove it though you will need to make a bit of angled
bracket to turn on the reverse lamps.

I'm not that posh! I'm getting used to it without the gate, I
can forsee a problem when my Dad next drives it though, springs
on order to be fitted when I can be arsed to take out the floor.

Betsy just did the same damn thing today on pur way to Reeth for
a spot of laning. Luckily still perfectly driveable and you can
still feel it go past the gate to reverse. CBA with needing to
fix it but don't like leavong stuff undone.

2 new springs fitted gear stick ball joint greased and all is
good in the gay hybrid world of gear shifting. ;D Just need to
fit the new seals in the clutch slave and master, but thats a
job for tomorrow.
