lost 3 &4th gears -- bollocks!
DIR By: elegia

Last night on my way into town, coming up to the roundabout; I
changed down out of overdrive, then out of 4th and
into........bollocks no 3rd then bollocks no 4th Dmmy spit
No crunching, no horrible noises just cannot get into either of
those gears. It's like it's blocked, just cannot move the gear
stick into those positions. Reverse, 1, 2, transfer and
overdrive all work fine.
Cue recovery wagon (and thanks again for Genem for stopping by
too!).
So, any "heads-up" on possible/ probable culprits? I know damn
all about gearboxes (although I suspect that may change over the
course of the next wee while!!). Just thought I'd ask first
before I open things up and the weeping starts!! :banghead
I'm optimistic it's not terminal............... (that's my usual
patter!)...............................

I'm a gearbox layman but it sounds like the ball at the bottom
of the gear stick has slipped out of it channel that moves the
selector rods. Take your gearbox tunnel piece of floor out.
It'll be obvious! Short of that I don't know. But its a start!

I lost 3rd and 4th once. The culprit turned out to be one of
the "W" shaped flat springs in the 3/4th synchro hub, it had
broken in two and prevented the selection of either gear. It
was possible to get to the problem by opening the top of the box
in situ and the other two "W" springs were man enough to do
their work without the third one being replaced.

As you can select the other gears it sounds like a fault on the
3rd/4th selector/syncro hub. If you take the transmission
tunnel out gear stick off (check it's not a problem with that
whilst your there) you might just be able to take the top cover
off the gearbox without removing the seat box, though IIRC it's
a real PITA with it in place. All the selectors should lift out,
though it's easier if the box is in third (I know :-P) The
3rd/4th selector is teh one you'll be able to see nearest the
front of the box. There's 3 detent springs which help control
the movement of the selector inside the bronze coloured cage,
they frequently snap and may have wedged things.

My 109 lost 3rd / 4th when neither would engage. Towed home by
brother's Disco which made him smug. I then found the problem
had gone! Drained the gearbox oil & out came part of a w spring
which I assume was jamming the selector hub & was thrown clear
during the rescue. No further trouble so 2 springs must be
enough.

my d suffix gearbox lost all three springs you lot talking
about. i still managed to use the gears if i applied double
clutching. cannot say it is their cause.
visual inspection is the only way to check on the problem
