Been playing with my new welder....

Managed to pick up a near brand new Gas Less Mig welder for
£14!!!! Two rolls of wire set me back £12. Thought I would have
a play and set about making an old Calor Gas tank into a out
door heater;

Needs a bit of fettling .... weld quality is probably due to the
inexperience of the driver.....but what the heck it works!

Nope its a flux core wire so no need for Gas. In fact there is
no where to connect the Gas!
Looks like it will be ok to weld up the chassis tho.

Go on, tell me, how the hell do you cut a gas bottle without
blowing yourself from here to kingdom come?

One method i have heard of is to remove the valve from the top
and put hose pipe in a fill with water and leave it for a while
before cutting. Havent tried it personally sodont blame me if it
blows up in your face !!!

Aaahhh there in lies the problem.....as Wallis says...
1. Open the valve and release any left over Propane. Did this in
the open air well away from ignition sources. Also turned the
bottle upside down and gave it a shake as this encouraged more
gas out.
2. Un-wound the valve......not easy but ok if you have a spanner
that fits.
3. Fill with Water....empty .......Fill with
Water....empty.......repeat many times and leave it full.
4. I left it as full as possible but laid it on its side to cut
the side of the tank. The smaller the volume of air the less the
chance of explosion.
5. Once first cut was made then you are pretty much safe....I
welded the hinge on before cutting the rest of the door.
Thankfully no Kaboom.......

It is not free gas that is the problem with this-the methods
described above will see to the free gas . It is the gas that is
bonded to the 'heavy ends' found in the bottom of the cylinder
that are potentially the problem. I previously have recounted
the story of the bloke in West Auckland who had successfully
opened up a cylinder and then decided to grind the rusty shit
out of the inside. The resultant fireball enveloped him. He
succumbed to his very severe burns a few days later...
Just looking at a gas cylinder it is impossible to tell whether
it has been (wrongly) stored on it's side or not and just where
the heavy ends are. I'm not saying don't do it but I am pointing
out that there is a very high risk factor.

Interesting, ( Love the stove btw ! )...I made a couple of LR
fuel tanks years ago, using calor bottles, I did the water thing
too, then drilled the periphery of the holes I wanted for the
filler neck etc, finishing by filing to shape, I gas welded the
bits and bobs on to the tank and survived to this day !
I wasn't aware of any potential nasty explosive shit that could
still be left in them, so good to know the above intel.....I was
considering making another in the near future
