Speedo illimination

I thought that as I was going to put 750r16 onto my 80" I would
change the speedo to a 1504. Now my motor has no dash
illumination, but I buy 5 meter strips of soft white LEDs to cut
down and illuminate buildings on my model railways.
So rather than a feeble 12v bulb behind the metal speedo bezel,
lets run a ring around the rim and see what its like.
Given that the strips run at 12v I also added an extra 1K
resistor to handle the 14.4 voltage of a healthy charging
system.

Clever idea, though I suspect it might be a bit bright at night
in the cab :-?
You can get digital dimmers for the led strips as long as the
strips are 3528 or 5050 which are the most common ones on Ebay,
very cheap from Asia:

I'm not sure if either will remember their setting between

Hi Robin
Funnily you should mention that, I was contemplating building a
dimmer last night, actually they are very simple, a couple of
resiters, a potentiometer and a 555 timer chip.
Basically to dim an LED you need to alter the DC wave pattern,
ergo you switch them on and off and very how long they are on
for with how long they are off.
Sounds wierd, but we have recently fitted LED downlighters in
our hallway, its quite ammusing because you can see a strobe
effect when the dog wags his tail

Yeah, but at a quid or two is it worth making your own then
finding some way to box/mount it :rolleye0012:

That looks very impressive...even though for me, checkiong the
speed ain't an issue as I don't think The Shed is capable of
exceeding the limit!
It'll be interesting if the LED's flicker at tickover. I have
fitted white LED sidelight bulbs and they do flicker. Once the
revs rise just a little, they are constant and bright.

Ahh but I just like building things, the circuit is published in
the MERG (Model Electronic Railway Group) new letter.
As for flickering, For the dash lighting I would just put a
smoothing capacitor in the supply, plus a bridge rectifier so it
it polarity insensitive.
Besides, my 80 gets used for trialing rather than concourse so I
dont care what I bolt on, thats what meccano sets are for.

Where did you get the LED strip from?
It might just be what I need to replace my broken dash lights
