K-series in a series???
DIR By: Nono

So I've been searching for a while but have not found a thing.
First I like my 1963 109 more and more.
I don't need to go a lot faster
I hate diesel
Need a bit more MPG
And a bit less noise.
So I don't mind keeping the series box (might add an OD once)
but the 2.25 petrol I am not to sure about.
Mine is a bit oily smelly carb is past its prime etc.
So I could fix up the 2.25 go to a 9:1 compression and a Hiff SU
carb fit LPG etc
Or I could fit an other petrol engine.....
And since the 1.8 rover K-series has some Land Rover provenance,
torque from low (below 2000rpm) nice power and is a lot more
frugal I can't understand why it has not been done?
What problem am I missing (other than the mating engine and
box)?

It perhaps has something to do with the Rover K series engine
being a crock of shit. I've known a number of people with Rover
cars have a lot of problems with them (before Rover went bust
they were the least reliable make with 28.3 out of 100 vehicles
breaking down per year in the Lex Vehicle Leasing stats). Having
driven more Rover cars than I care to remember with the K series
they are the definition of gutless, below 4,000 rpm there's
nothing power-wise. Torque is non-existant, completely hopeless
in a 4x4/SUV application. I had a Freeloader 1.8 petrol as a
loan car for a few weeks and it certainly was not economical nor
a pleasant drive, a Tdi Disco is far nicer all round in my
opinion.
The 2.0 litre T series lump found it's way into the Discovery
Mpi and was (as to be expected) pretty awful. It only existed to
manipulate the Disco into a certain company car tax bracket
(sub-2000cc) - certainly not an engine anyone would seriously
want out of choice.
I can understand not wanting a diesel, but I'm not convinced
you'd see any improvement in MPG with any other petrol lump.
Perhaps an ex-boingy 2.5 with twin choke Weber would be
marginally better when tuned properly?

Hmm have had plenty of experience with the K-series and it aint
bad.
My sister did a good try destroying the HG and failed (despite
all stories) and in cars weighing 1100KG it is fast and
economical (40mpg)
I figured adding 600KG might get the mpg down a bit and make it
slow but 30mpg and slightly more power would be nice.
But a 2.5 would be a lot less work just a bit less common (read
cheap) in the scrappies here.
I did think about fitting that small supercharger I have lying
around with one of those efi throttlebody's on my scrap pile....

So you like the engine, you don't want to go diesel, and you
don't need to go faster.
Sounds like a stripped down/rebuilt/lightly modified 2.25 petrol
is the answer.
Rebuild the 'box and o/d (You should have one to keep the revs
(=noise) down at cruising speed).
Sound proof the bulkhead, bonet underside, and sound-deaden the
floor/footwells.
Job done.
As far as MPG is concerned, you can do a lot with your driving
style. I doubt if any other petrol engine will really give you
much more MPG to speak of, unless you're prepared to suffer the
trade-offs.
Oh, and +1 for having experienced a K-Series engine and deeming
it utter sheee-ite.

Rebulid the 2.25 petrol and fit LPG and some soundproofing
possibly?

Hmmm I love the K series engines, but not any bigger than 1.6 Go
to 1.8 and they are outside the design limit. Most early
Freelander 1s with 1.8 give trouble. At 1.4/1.6 in a light car
they are fast and economical, trust me I wound 180000 miles on a
company Rover 400 and no it did not break. But in a series ?
never.

K series's a great piece of design, but its a high revving small
petrol engine, not ideal for a 4x4
Historically they had their issues, but they are well known and
then fixes are cheap, and readily available - dont properly ,
even the 1.8 is now reliable, even with a turbo
KV6 could be an interesting conversion, should walk all over a
rover V8, and much smaller and lighter - but same issues as
bellow to fit it
Fitting it to a series though is going to be quite difficult,
hope your a good engineer as your going to have to design and
make adapters to fit it to the gearbox, clutch, exhaust, engine
mounts, cooling system etc , not to mention the engine is
designed for transverse mountings so possible alter them oil
pick up system , then make the fuel injection system work ...
Can all be done, but not easy
If you want modern petrol, the 2.0mpi from a disco 1 will be the
easiest way to go. It being designed to be mounted tha way, and
to a LR gearbox
Reality is with any standard LR petrol, either V8, 2.25 or 2.5
no matter what you do, your going to struggle make more than low
20's mpg , the basic design is just to old and basic

By chance this came up on a lesser fora just recently and one
member knew of a 1.8K vvc engined comp safari motor.
This made me meerkat to the endth degree for I've been mulling
over such an idea myself.
While many a humdrum K series was indeed a pile of badly built
wank it seemed odd that the truly fast versions were actiually
more reliable and things like uprated water pumps and new
multilayer head gaskets mean they are a very light and powerful
engine with reasonable reliability but a historical reputation
than means they are absolutely peanuts.
Only thing for me is that such poor low end torque isn't so much
of an issue but a daily driver...in a 109...I'd pass.
T series has been done and while gutless in a Discgay is after
all 130bhp? Certainly know of a very very quick racer with a
turbo T series of some legend. (0-60 in les than 6 secs)
Once again as a daily motor....hmmm.
As for the KV6 they sound absolutely fan-bloody-tastic on song
and as close to a 6R4 engine as you can get noise wise but that
would take a lot work. Roland Marlows racing 88" uses a KV6
coupled to a MGZT/JATCO autobox with paddle shift and a 1:1
crownwheel with the outputs fitted with flanges to accept the
Land Rover Props. No low box but nigh on 200bhp and naff all
weight compared to any other conventional LR engine/box setup.

if you want a more modern petrol engine, thats easily available
what about the Ford zetec 2.0. plenty used by kitcar boys which
means rwd conversion and tuning bits available. just need to
sort out gearbox adapter.
