Red Oxide

Or the best primer to use on previously rusty (but now
thoroughly cleaned / blasted) steel prior to a coat of
water-proof chassis black.
Something to prevent/retard the return of rust under the black
stuff.
Any recommendations? or any products to avoid at all costs..!

zinc rich primer would be better protection than red oxide but
much more expensive

Good advice, thanks HippyD.
Money is not an object - she deserves it..!!
Out of interest, are most zinc rich primers 'weld-through'
primers, or is that an additional property?

Stokes QD Zinc Phosphate primer is good stuff. "Red oxide" is
just a colour of the primer these days.

Red oxide is not the same as Old red lead, I have been told you
can still get hold of propper red lead if you cliam to be doing
restoration work on an old boat, you can get it from some boat
chandlers but i have never followed this up as i aquired some
Zinc rich primer at the right price.

I find smith and allen OK for piant, not sure if they will have
anything suitable but the prices are usually good.

Suggesting to the Health Visitor that you plan on making a
play-pen for the sprog out of some old angle iron and a tin of
red lead is a no-no. #windupthegulliblecow.
Teaching the sprog to respond with "Oh No!" every time the
health visitors name was mentioned as fun as well....

We use that at work in various colours - mainly red and matt
black. It seems very good stuff, and it's not stupidly
expensive. It's very fast drying - I've been using it on the
bits of my morris minor I've welded, and often put three or four
coats on in an afternoons work with no problem.

On the 2a which is pulled down to a bare chassis and axles at
the mo, I'm just using "ballastic black high build bituminous
paint' which is a VERY thick bitumen paint, it's marine paint
for boats and barges ,resistant to total immersion in salt water
etc etc, it's paintable direct on to steel.... which is what
they'd do to a boat and what I'm doing on the chassis !
I've had good results daubing thick coats of bitumen paint on LR
chassis in the past, so thought I'd do likewise this time, but
researched products a bit this time ( ...if it's ok for boats in
salt water..! )
I shall do a few coats finally, currently I'm doing odd bits of
welding and paint over as I go, I'll be interested to see how it
survives..!
