Jumps out of second gear

Since you're all so helpful I will ask another question. My old
S2 jumps out of second gear now and then, usually when I am
trying to roll out of a junction in front of something. It
might be when I drop the power on it a bit hard. It's an early
box with no synchro on second. Any idea how
hard/painful/tedious it would be to fix it? Is it possible to
do it without lifting the gearbox out?

This is sometimes caused by the nut on the back of one of the
shafts coming loose. If you look at the back of the gearbox
there will be a round plate with 6 studs holding it on (unless
you have an overdrive?). Remove the plate and there is a funny
looking nut on the end of the mainshaft. Remove the nut and
replace the special locking washer then replace the nut and re
torque to required setting (not sure off the the top of my head
I think it's 85 lb/ft). You will need a special tool to do the
job properly but am sure someone on here local to you will be
able to lend you one with a deposit on it. Some folk say you
should just tighten it by using a hammer and punch from the top
but personally I wouldn't recommend it. The other possible
problem is an issue with weak detent springs or worn selector
forks. Haynes manual tells you how to do these

Thanks. I do have an overdrive but I don't mind whipping it off
to have a look. But woudln't this problem affect all gears, not
just second? It's as good as gold in all the other gears.

In my experience its normally down to knackered bushes and worn
selector hubs.
Do a search in the tech archive and there's info on how the
boxes work.

My old gearbox did this and the rear nut was well loose when I
took the overdrive off!
Well worth the effort of checking it, and using some sort of
threadlock when you tighten it up.

If you remove the rear top cover, you can get to the nut, I
would be tempted to do this and nip it up with a hammer and
screwdriver, just make sure you engage one of the tabs on the
lock washer, you may have to spin the box over to find a tab in
the correct location.
Could be an easy fix?
The haynes manual actually susgests using a hammer and
screwdriver :eek:

Just bought myself one of them proper sockets. And about to try
the simple fix first.

Need the overdrive off first , you can't see or access it until
the overdrive is removed

Nooooooo....... ask Jim (silverspoon) how long it took us to
remove the nut from Brad's (romanyrose) gearbox after he'd used
some blue thread sealer :smiley-furious: :smiley-furious:

Nothing wrong with the tab washer provided the nut is torqued up
correctly.

For anyone that needs one I will be making a batch of 4
mainshaft nut spanners in the next few weeks, Was thinking of
sending north /south etc to someone to keep local.
Deposit would be good to ensure they return to base. Not doing
them to sell just a service to others.
