a momentous day but with more questions

So after nearly two years I finally managed to get my 109
running with the scabby 19j in. Turns out the fuel distributor
was at fault. Needless to say I'm as chuffed as a chuffed thing.
However, it has raised a couple of questions. It smoke blue
smoke. Not loads but enough. Now I was expecting this as I know
they wear etc, so I'm thinking I'm going to re-ring it but do I
do it from underneath or do I have to take the head off?
Secondly the temperature gauge didn't seem to be working. With
the petrol in it was getting really hot so I knew it worked but
now it didn't seem to work. It was running for a good half an he
and wasn't getting particularly hot. The hoses weren't hard and
there was no pressure in the header tank. Could it just be the
sender not working or the rheostat? How do I test them? Thirdly
when I drove it round the village it did seem a bit flat. The
turbo seems to be whistling nicely so I'm thinking the pump may
be a little retarded so which way do I turn the pump to advance
it?
That's it for now but I'm sure there will be more.
Cheers, Steve

Petrol in it ? Advance pump ? I assume it is a doozle. Live with
it until you have a few miles on to blow all the crap through,
if you need to put rings in yes from underneath and yes the head
comes off to do it. Check/lap valves and fit new oil seals to
valve stems.
If you go the new rings route be sure to hone/glaze break the
bores.
Temperature wise change the stat for an 82 degree job ( or
whatever the 19J has) It may well be buggered after standing.

Certainly where buses are concerned it can take a long drive to
clear smoke of one that's been standing for a few years. Just
last week a good friend of mine with a commercial repair
business took a '59 Routemaster out for over an hour to clear it
out, it had been standing for 4 years. Before worrying too much
about a bit of smoke I'd be wanting to take it for a good long
drive where it gets up to temperature properly, anyone with a
military series will vouch for the water getting up to
temperature a long time before the oil does.
Also, the pump timing can cause blueish smoke. I sold a 2.25
diesel a few years ago to Mark Rumsey, he saw it running and I
thought it was burning oil as the smoke was blue. He was
convinced the timing was a bit out and nothing worse than that.

Nice one, thanks Noel, that puts my mind at rest a bit. I do
have another question...Before I took it off the road the brakes
were really good being servo assisted. The vacuum pump is
sucking like an experience prostitute but the pedal is really
hard. Could it be sucking too much or could the servo be stuck
from lack of use?

Just to clarify your question and answer about piston rings. You
need to remove the cylinder head and sump to do it. If you have
to ask this, it strikes me that you might need help doing
it.....

No don't worry it was a stupid question that I didn't think
about first. I was in a rush! I am confident in my abilities!

Is the brake pedal returning well after you release it Steve?
The pivot bush has a tendency to sieze up, had the same thing
with the 109 earlier in the year. It won't hurt to remove the
plate on the the top of the pedal box and give it a decent dose
of WD40 followed by spray grease with lots of action in between.
It took a while for mine to ease up, the blowlamp helped to
persuade the lube to get where it needed to.
