       overheating?

my 2.25 petrol engine runs hot on the gauge, like just in the
       red bit.
I've opened bonnet and all seems ok, rad hot at top, cooler at
bottom, not boiling over so I assume the thermostat and pump are
       doing their jobs
the fuel gauge seems ok as it doesn't read high, so I guess the
       voltage stabiliser is ok
due to the above I believe the temp sensor is faulty and reading
       high.
unless the gauge itself is faulty
       what do you all think?
sensor or gauge or something else?

I've just thought about this, it was originally a 2.6, would the
       gauge be different?

As far as I know gauge and senders were the same across the 4
and 6 cyl engines. It could well be the sender, I've had all
sorts of wierdness with pattern parts. A genuine sender is about
£8 or so and well worth it. Another suggestion would be pull the
gauge cluster and rig it to another series with a known good
sender, just to be sure. Simple enough to run a wire from the
sender to the gauge, then on to the voltage stabiliser without
       buggering about too much.

       I'd echo Noel's reply.
I had a dodgy sender. The way I diagnosed it was to park my S3
alongside a friends. We put a jump lead across to connect the
two battery negative terminals together. Then we unplugged the
temperature senders from the side of the engine block. We used a
length of wire (speaker cable actually!) to extend the lead that
was connected to his sender so that it would reach mine.
My engine read fine on his gauge, so I deep-sixed my sender and
fitted a new genuine parts sender which saw it all working fine.
       Cheers

A nautical term, not heard that one before

thanks for the replys, I shall fit a new sender and let you know
       the result.

       right then,
fitted a new sender unit a couple of weeks ago. admittedly not a
genuine one, but not in a blue box, made no difference,
so tried a known good voltage stabiliser last week and then a
good gauge after, still no difference.
so today fitted a new thermostat and guess what ? yep broke one
bolt off in head Dmmy spit
drilled it out and tapped new thread, fitted stat, gaskets new
       bolts etc
       and the result
       still reading hot
       bugger!

have you flushed the rad out wit a reasonably high pressure
       hose?

What happens if you uplug the wire from the sender and short it
       out against the engine block?
On some (all?) 2.25s the sender is screwed into a threaded
insert in the block. It might be worth unscrewing the threaded
insert, cleaning up the threads and re-inserting.
       Cheers

"My engine read fine on his gauge, so I deep-sixed my sender and
fitted a new genuine parts sender which saw it all working
       fine."
You using this expression in the traditional (and correct)
nautical way, Huffo, or the modern 'gangsta' way?
For the lubbers, deep-sixing refers to hoying something over the
       wall. Clear? ;D ;D
