Brake Fluid.

I have a litre placcy bottle wotsit of DOT 4 brake fluid, it's
never been opened and is still sealed etc, however it's about 6
or 7 years old (actually could even be more than that?). It's
been stuck inside the ammo box inside the back of my truck so
has gone thru' cold winters and hot summers and all that. Will
it still be okay with it being sealed of is it better to just
use it as paint stripper or summat? Does unopened brake fluid
have a 'use by' or 'best before' period?

I've always been told you shouldn't keep opened fluid for too
long. How true that is now I don't know, but if it's a small
bottle I'd be keeping it for summat less critical like the
clutch. You'll soon feel when that's not quite right.

Don't think it has a use by date, but as above, It doesn't do to
keep an open bottle, as brake fluid absorbs moisture from the
air (hydroscopic or summat like that)
IMHO even a can thats been opened - if kept well sealed & dry
should be OK

Im sure theres quite a few land rovers with 5+ yrs old brake
fluid in the resovoirs doing the job well. You say the bottle
sealed. id only be concerned if using it in a racing machine
that requires high temp cover from heavy useage. Im sure its
intact and very useable. donk.

Cheers folks. It is in a sealed bottle (as in still sealed by
the factory, it's never been opened) so I guess it should be
okay. I suppose though for what it costs maybe for the brakes
it'll do no harm to buy a fresh bottle and keep this old one for
the clutch as mentioned by Noel, guess if the fluid in the
clutch system does have a dodgy turn it's a whole lot less
critical than having it gan tits up in the brake system!!

Bung it in! As already mentioned there's bound to be Landys
driving about with older fluid in their systems...

Aye...mine!! The stuff in the truck is probably way worse than
what's in the bottle!!

I goes very cloudy when it ages, if it looks really clear with a
slight yellow tint it should be fine. Any cloudyness get
something else.
