       Relaxing the outer skin on a s3 door

       The passenger door on me blue series 3 has a very badly damaged
       alloy skin, the internal steel frame is pretty good and I've
       another door with a shot frame but good skin, is it practical to
       change the skin and get a good result?
       I know it's riveted at the top but not sure if it's blind
       riveted elsewhere?

       Just rivets on the top and round the handle then warm the
       lip/folded edge and fold it back a little at a time.

       I think it helps if you aneal the ally first to stop it cracking
       at the fold, you will have to read up on this I think there are
       several ways to tell when it is hot enough but not too hot that
       it melts.

       Ive never tried it myself, but the method I keep seeing repeated
       in magazines is to draw lots of lines in marker pen on the
       section to anneal, then heat the metal with a hot air gun. When
       the marker pen lines turn a translucent colour, rub a bit of
       lolly stick or wooden dowel on them - if it leaves a black
       smudge on the wood then the metal is hot enough and ready to
       work.

       To heat to right temperature to anneal, smear with washing up
       liquid and heat until the liquid turns brown.
       Used this method the other week and it worked a treat.

       We used to use ordinary bar soap rubbed onto the metal so
       basically the same as FT. The skins I tried to salvage for reuse
       had corroded inside the fold and no amount of annealing was
       going to rescue them.
