patching bulkhead :blahblah

i am in such a bad mood :(
after having a go at stripping off footwells and ordering new
ones off the bay.. i started off patching some parts. easily
acessible ones.. and damn this metal work is so hard to weld :(
i was using g14 rods with little amperage and very short burns.
and still holes managed to form. i am going nuts!!
i have come across this on ebay any comments on it?

i rather stick one on top of other and spot it rather than have
it looks so rough..

Hmm, welding is about practice and more than anything and
setting up the welder properly, might pay to practice on some un
important stuff? I dived in a bit and some of my first bits
where a bit crap.
I find drilling a hole in one panel then pooling in a spot weld
with the mig seems to work well, less heat harder to fuck up and
looks neater, you can dress up messy work with a flexible fibre
sanding disc in the angle grinder and it hides a multitude of
sins :rolleye0012:

I think he is using an arc welder NOT a mig
a whole different ball game especially on thin sheet.

Fuck, I wouldn't arc weld a bulkhead.... It's mig work and even
then you will blow holes if the metal is thin.. Use the correct
welder and practice... I hope when you say patch you mean cut
out and let in? My bulkhead had three layers of footwell when I
cut them out, each one making a new rust trap and eating any
good metal... I have now replaced 70% of the fucking thing and
still haven't finished.

Yep it will be very hard to stick weld a bulkhead, hence my
suggestion of trying spot welds, might be best not to drill out
a hole just weld through both seams. good luck. :-? I wouldn't
practice on the actual bulkhed

i removed the footwells and need to cut more.
there is plenty of holes in the top where the vent flap hinges
are.. :2mo5pow:
lots of cracks in sheet steel where torsion and fatigue showed
up on central part of bulkhead. the brace is snapped. some top
corner work. and also the rear mounts dead. pillars salvagable.
:)
yeah i guess that arc is not the way to go even if at low
setting. the flux is always in the way i will ask a shop to see
if they can handle it for me. when i align the footwels etc i
just take it to them and see what they can do.
tonight i only repaired the area where the fuel mounts. PO tack
welded two bolts and washers instead of repairing area and using
rivnuts and i thought i cut the rectangle of sheet out and weld
in a same sized rectangle and go on slow. at some points i did
10mm of straight weld but if i dont get of it digs a hole. so
grind fil in with stick and re grind. looks not bad and filter
will hide a bit of it too plus its under the bonnet.. but other
areas >vom<

cant say my welding is terrible
In the past eight years have welded my way through fabricating a
solid carrier using thin hollow tubes, my own 1tonne+ plant
trailer, many a repair on my agricultural stuff and also other
small projects and builds which hold on well it is the thickness
of metal that is freaking me. i will go talk to this guy
tomorrow see what he things. they are nice people (not doing it
for free ) but i thought i would break up work in little
quantities and make it worth the while. but it is depressing.

Im sure part of your problem is that the bulkheads rust from the
inside out... thus the metal is really thin even where it looks
ok.
as has been said, be prepared to grind alot of it flat again...

:popcorn: i 'll guess i 'll spend some time reading/searching
for a nice good suitable mig..
on the bay there are plenty to pick.. don't wish to divert
thread or change it into a sloppy one.
but if you have any tips on the right bit of mig would be nice
of you.
those bloody series three bulkheads are very weak in the
centre.. so many fatigue cracks and chipped out parts...
that lovely dashboard from series 2 was good at keeping them
rigid

Have a look at mig-welding.co.uk. Plenty of good advice about
welders and welding.
