Penetrating oil

I ripped this from the S2 site think I will give it a go.
I thought this would be worth mentioning again and may help
someone in the future.
From the Web...
Machinist's Workshop Mag (tm)recently published some information
on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting. Some
of you might appreciate this. the magazine reports they tested
penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts.
They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional
machinist.
They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants
with the control being the torque required to remove the nut
from
a "scientifically rusted" environment.
*Penetrating oil .......... Average load*
None ........................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ............... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix...............53 pounds
The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better
than any commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use
it with equally good results.
Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil" for
about 20% of the price.

Diesel works fairly well too.

I find white spirit penetrates pretty well, I am sure plus gas
is just white spirit.

What base acetone is used? Industrial acetone, a commercial
product, something from the motor factors?

I'd be interested to know why ATF in particular? The acetone is
obviously a transporting solvent to carry the thicker fluid into
the joint - but not knowing the make-up of the ATF, is there
something about that means (when compared to, say, engine oil)
it either travels particularly well or lubricates well when it
reaches the target?

^^^Look at a cross-section of an automatic gearbox or
power-steering unit, Matthew, and you'll know why ATF has proved
good in this home brew and is ideal to lubricate what it does
with such low viscosity, when compared to, say, petrol engine
oil.
I recently released some fast selectors on the 2b's box using a
50/50 of paraffin and diesel. Reckoned the diesel properties
would do well for the penetration and the paraffin would remain
as a lube. How my science stood up to close scrutiny is beyond
me...but it worked.

I've not heard of most of them in the list (presume they're from
across the pond?) but I usually use either Plusgas or GT85, both
seem to work just fine.

I'm a big fan of asda's own brand multi spray, great for
cleaning as well

Evening all, sorry for dragging this thread up from the dead but
I'm going to try making some of this home brew.
Now that I'm a chemist, I can lay my hands on large quantities
of industrial acetone no problem - but having been looking for
some suitable ATF I've been bamboozled with choices. What is the
difference between Dexron 2, Dexron 3 and ATF-U?
Obviously, the better the brand the better the fluid, but as its
going to be sprayed on old bolts I think i'll be plumping for
the cheapest stuff possible. Has anyone else tried making this
concoction before at all?

Not sure about the ATF grades but I put some in an old
motorcycle gearbox that had selection issues. Within 50 miles I
had no problems with selection so may be it reaches the parts
other oils can not.
