steering box gaskets

can I replace the steering box gaskets in situ? ive adjusted the
free play and the steering feels great but it is leaking oil
faster than the roof lets in rain! :-?

I would say 'yes we can'. dun it recently for my mate and it is
leak free now. You just need to do a bit of dismantling: the
wheel and the cover, obviously, and then the inner wing to get
to the top nuts of the side cover. It is still rather tight but
doable. clean it all, new gasket and silicone. (Don't touch the
top or bottom flange though - that's were all the loose steel
balls are...) to get the round thingy on the shaft back into the
moulding of the side plate in that position is a bit fiddly and
all has to be lined up nicely before you carefully slide the
cover back on. ... better test it before you put all the other
covers back on... and have a spare gasket just in case, they are
cheap...

cheers for reply. worth a go then if it falls apart suppose
still in same boat and have to take it off any way.

I have a think the britpart gaskets have a fitting issue, the
advice I had was to get a genuine one.

I actually used Sheitparts gaskets twice now - ebay sellers
often don't indicate the make...worth asking beforehand...
holding so far... fingers crossed...

If you mean the side plate gasket then yes it is an easy job
however if your leaks are from the column and or the bottom
plate then I would remove the box as it will be much easier and
you will also be able to make a check of the endfloat on the
main column.
