2.25L Petrol engine causing probs

Engine started missing and blowing black smoke. Revs slowly up
but gives the putt putt sound. Lost power and limped home in
low range 4wd as it didn't have the power to cope with high
range. Looked down into the carby throat and has a black and
sooty film in there.
What the hell could that be? Donk

Black smoke indicates a rich mixture. Soot in the carb throat is
indicative of either blowback or exhaust gases being drawn into
the intake. I'd be inclined to run through basic checks first.

Yes basic checks are needed Timing, tappets, fuel lift pump and
float level to start with. When you check the points scrape the
crap off the contacts in the distributor cap.

Ive got a electronic dizzy which I suspect is the prob. But
don't get any popping or backfire. Im thinking theres a lack of
ign advance on acceleration. Did a compression test and is
100psi across the 4. Not great but enough. The engine when cold
starts easily and runs like a charm but when you go to drive it
power is lost and the black smoke an inability to rev up. The
timing is 3 degrees btdc.
Fuel is a concern. There was no fuel in the filter , I took the
hose off and fuel spurted out under pressure so should be ok? I
don't think black smoke is conducive to running lean or is it?
inline Fuel filter is new, arrow on the filter pointing towards
the carb. Its either the carb or dizzy...might be both. It has
a weber and a bbc elec ign. Never got this engine running that
great after fitting those. Might have to go back with points and
a Zenith copy. Last zenith copy had the floods on an angle
after 1 month from refacing surfaces(this was ongoing after
resurfacing 3 times in a year or so), so I tried to improve
things by buying a new carb and dizzy but it hasn't worked out.

Did you fit an eleccy ignition compatible coil, Steve?
I got SBBC eleccy conversion and the motor lacked power under
load, until I swapped for the correct coil, then it was great.
It started on the button and hoofed nicely. Then I went back to
points for my trip to the UK, as I had spare points dizzys,
should anything go wrong...which it did. I'd put on a new one of
SBBC's new 'Lucas-a-like' dizzys, which are pretty shit
Chink-made scrap, to be honest.
It may also be worth checking your vacuum-to-carb advance/retard
pipe isn't ruptured or fouling the swing of the throttle linkage
(which could be an accidental carb re-fit problem), as if the
throttle lever strikes and pushes this at revs, it will alter
the setting.
How any of this would generate black smoke is beyond my
knowledge and is likely something I'd only remedy through
fortunate trial and adjustment. But many of the load/power
symptoms you speak of (I've not had smoke), I had myself
recently and were solved by replacing/repairing along the lines
of what I've said

Right thanks Drew, blood pressures down now, the coil was part
of the kit that bbc sent along with the high spark kit, it is
the low resistance variety. I will check the resistance
tomorrow.
I think its the distributor not giving up the advance under
acceleration and load. The timing goes bonkas and it wont rev
up. When cold start it runs ok, can rev through the ranges but
as soon as you go to drive it , it blows smoke and the engine
sounds flooded although I don't smell any excess fuel and there
is no tell tale leaking anywhere.
Im not discounting the carb altogether. But in my new calm zen
like frame of mind, I will swap the carby out to identify which
component is causing the grief. I have the old zenith knockoff,
which works well on the flat but runs a bit rich on angles. Ive
got the old points distributor which I know works ok. It could
well be that both of the new items are not at their best and
causing havoc.

is the fuel good and not contaminated?
had a mates V8 rangey suffering with similar symptons, turned
out he had tipped a jerry can of fuel in the tank, not knowing
it was 50/50 petrol and diesel

Hmmm I just got some fresh fuel. Might be contaminated, spose
I better drain the fuel out and start there. Thanks Donk
