Spare wheel mount?

My 109 station wagon doesn't have anywhere to put the spare, no
mount on bonnet or on rear door, so it currently slides around
in the back. I dont have any rear seats at all (something else
to buy later)
I've got big gay wheels, I've tried one on the bonnet and cant
really see past it.
So, I'm thinking about a swing away jobby for the back, rather
than bolting it on the rear door.
Are these mounts any good?
Or does anyone have any better mounting solutions?

Man the fuck up and get rid of the gay wheels! Then it'll fit on
the bonnet.

I put a swingaway mounted to the capping and the rear cross
member of my 88" - it might have looked a bit modern for the
Series but it held the wheel without stressing the door and it
added an extra layer of security too (as you could lock it shut)

I played that game years ago with my 109 Safari
The problem with a wheel on the front (Trac-Edge 7.50x16) is
that it does obscure forward vision and makes it a bugger to
open the bonnet.
The S11 also had a swing away carrier on the rear that located
onto a tailgate cleat of the other side of the door from the
hinge. This meant you could not open the rear door from inside!
Annoying but not often a requirement. but you do have to swing
the carrier away first then open the door. Another problem I
found was that the weight of the wheel over time fractured most
of the spot welds holding the o/s rear wing together!!
I have also seen that a consequence of the newer carriers that
bolt the bottom hinge to the chassis cross member actually
result in the chassis rotting away at that point.
As for mounting it on the rear door, well again the weight of
the wheel is notorious for fatiguing away all the door frame
welds and the back door falling to pieces.
I ultimately resorted to fastening it to the roof rack but of
course they are heavy sods to get up there and I was 20 years
younger.

Now for the light at the end of the tunnel.
The later Defender TD5/Puma rear doors are made from pressed
steel, instead of a frame and ali skin and have the same wheel
mounts that you find on Disco 1/2s and of course are a simple
swap. (They also have a third hinge to bear some of the weight).
So either source a whole door or get a wheel mount relatively
cheaply from a scrapper (got one for a tenner recently) and
mount that with some strengthening to the rear door.

What about a mount at the rear of the seat bulkhead !I only took
mine off because in an 88 they do take up a bit too much room.In
a109 of course there is a lot more room. :thumbs:

The big question is "is it a 3 or 5 door"?
As a 3 door then they usually had a wheel well in the wheel
arch/box behind the driver with a bracket, these are often found
on ebay and could be retrofitted but often folk ask for e
rediculous amount for them, god curse fleabay for over pricing
spares :smiley-furious:
In a 5 door / 12 seater you are fairly limited really to the
floor or the tradutional external fittings.

I made a heavy duty swingaway carrier out of scaff tube I welded
up, the bottom was fixed to a plate with a hole in it welded to
rear crossmember,....I think these type of spare wheel
arrangements are great, makes a good tug style buffer on the
back too !
I also rather liked the fact that when locked in place it
prevented any little scroat from getting into back of the motor
!

in reply to the above, in no particular order.
I quite like the gayspokes :gay: they've got near new tyres, so
will only get changed when weared down a bit, unless I can find
some ANR's or 203's at a "good" price :smilewide:
its a 109 station wagon, so a 5 door and no bulkhead behind
front seats,
I'd thought about fitting a standard 109 type mount in the rear,
but then I wouldn't be able to fit a bench seat on that side,
I like the idea of making something out of scaff tube or
similar.
might have to sit down with paper and pencil and start doodling

Scaff tube is brilliant ! Stuff made from it looks great and
says "Fuck Off" quite convincingly !
I made some 'orrible side bars for someone else's S3 out of
scaff too, they were much admired, unfortunately the motor got
torched in it's garage... ( having said that it had some wicky
wicky gaylord Ford v6 engine conversion so actually deserved to
be torched )

Nowt wrong with the old V6 essex appart from the fibre timing
ring. had a mate with a s111 ex military 109 with one in, went
like stink, and sounded even better than my old V8 on idle.
Even better I recall a Jag 6cyl 4.2 in a 109 at the same time,
used to see it playing at Tong, awsome !
2.25 are OK but thats it ( prefer my 2l IOE )
