Hi all,
I'm collecting a complete s3 swb this week as a possible spares
truck. It does however come with a spare ex mill gearbox. I'm
hoping to put this into my 109. Question is, will it fit and if
so will I need to change anything or is it just its guts that
are different?

I thought all 4 syl boxes except 1 ton where the same.
The 6 cylinder ones is different, but only where it bolts onto
the engine.

Ex military to me means suffix D gearbox that has the
ElectroChemicallyMachined gears that are tougher than the
others. The dog teeth used in the synchromesh are supposedly a
different coffin shape that is more inclined to pull the gears
together and keep them there. That overcomes the age old problem
of worn gearboxes jumping out of gear on the overrun or going
down hill. Tha was what I was told. Donk

It will fit, and as a bonus they often have a top filler
(accessible from inside the vehicle if you have the appropriate
transmission tunnel with the rubber plugs); I assume this is
because the military spec "gearbox tie rod" makes filling the
usual way a bit awkward.

It might also have the tie-bar (anti-shunt) fitted to the left
hand side which connects to the loop on the GB crossmember..
this prevents the whole engine/gearbox assembly introducing
itself to the radiator when facing downhill....
