Heater options please?

Hi everyone, I've just bought a SWB series 3 which has been
converted to a 2.5d from a debender. There is currently NO
heater fitted, so before it getsreally cold, can anyone suggest
which way to go please? She's got a 'luxury' padded dash with
speedo in front of the driver. The demister heads are there, but
there is no lever for heater control or anything else relevant
that I can see. I am hoping to fit a TDI at some point, so I'd
like to fit something compatable? I am a numpty/newbie, so any
help is much appreciated!

A Smith's square block was an option on S3...with good reason,
as they are blocks of toast once warm.
Easy to plumb in, route de-mister pipes to and fit a switch for,
and likely somewhat cheaper than buying all the snail fan and
matrix boxes seen as standard on 3s.

Hey Mud,
One from a boingy will fit with a bit of fettling, and there's a
chap who breaks boingies next to the Chiltern Park Aerodrome
(off the A4074 between Reading and Wallingford).
(It was you who lives near Reading, right?)

SIII heater and is plenty warm enough, I've made sure there are
no leaks from the dash bottom and the matrix was replaced with a
new one, I could barley blow through the old one.
Heat and safe in the knowledge that ther are no more .22 rim
fire rounds lurking in my heater box :o

Hello chief,I am with Drew on this one. the square /slab heater
will be easier to fit and plumb up.they fit on the flat panel
twixt dash and gear tunnel. Had one in a 2a and was ok. Cheap
enough and simple if you take your time. :thumbs:

Let us have a couple of pictures of the inside of your cab and
engine bay, Mud. If we can see what you've already got, regards
standard components, we can give you better advice.
If you already have the heater plenum (lower dash), wing-mounted
snail fan and the matrix above the passenger footwell, it would
a shame to bypass these for the sake of locating some levers and
cables, as it would already be plumbed in to the matrix and
ready to give you heat.
However, if you have none of the above, I do stand by the
Smith's block being a far better unit (it is the type you've
seen in Lightweights), as whilst it's pretty-much the same motor
as a snail fan, it's blowing out directly to where it's needed,
and not through an oft' punctured broad-bore pipe, through a
matrix and on into the big void that is the plenum, by which
time it's often lost some of its gust and effectivenes.
A Smith's block fitted, with a S2/2a tap fitted above the
thermostat housin, for seasonal flow requirements, is a great
thing to have in the Leafer which is used as and when it should
be.

Second those that have said a square/slab heater - simple to
instal and gives plenty of heat if in good condition.

Firstly, Mud, I would buy a new camera...and I believe Fisher
Price would be a massive upgrade :smile1
Secondly, whoever/whenever the Def engine was lobbed in, the
snail fan and heater matrix would seem to have been jettisoned,
positioning the engine air-filter near the heater intake grille
on the wing. This could have been done better, but it is how it
is, as spasticated as it may be.
The good news is that you still have your lower dash heater
plenum and de-misters leading from it, so should be able to
re-install a snail and a matrix in the engine bay (with a bit of
shuffling about), plumb it in, connect some control cables and
levers to the right of the dash and away you pop. That's how I'd
go, now it's evident you have the big part.
My earlier advice of putting a Smith's slab in there, whilst
good for warm knees, will only see you butcher what is a good
and increasingly difficult to find (in a good state) lower dash,
to allow the de-misters through. And simply removing the plenum
will look gash, as the bulkhead will look wrongly bare and your
wiper motor will be exposed.
