...I'm going to want to junk the oil bath filter on the
       series....so what'll be easiest (cheapest!) to fit on a 2 1/4 s3
       diesel motor?

       Why?
Its what god intended and just requires cleaning and fresh oil
       every few years

       erm ...
       anything will need brakcets fabrication
maybe a paper one from a Tdi defender or one from a 90/110 but
then the filter pipe is in the wrong place
       But as ^^ why

What's wrong with the oil bath filter? Most of the time when
people say they aren't working is due to it being full of gunk.
Have you actually regularly cleaned it out properly? Does the
       hose have holes in it?
I've known people fit K&N's apparently you get a bit more MPG
out of it, however they are normally talking about petrols.

Yep 200 tdi or any similar sized element and canister type for a
similar sized engine. all will need mounting brackets. If you
fit a 200 TDI, Or 2.8 fourtrak filter be sure also to fit the
engine that was attached to said filter in place of the 2.25
       diesel... ;D
But there is nothing wrong with the oil bath unit so why change
it? ??? It lets plenty of air into the diesel even if you've
tweeked it to within an inch of it's life

I think there is a K&N type that goes on, but to my mind theres
little point (I have one on a 2.25 petrol) they need to be well
looked after and collect dust and gunk more than a standard oil
filter. Plan is to revert back to it, costs pennies to look
after and does the job just as well.

..thanks all...I was only going to change it as I only have 3/4
of one atm...and thought it might be easier to use something
else....but, as the general opinion is that they're pretty good,
I'll look to source the missing bits ;D

I think you should be able to pick up a whole one for at the
       most £10.

If you do decide to go for a paper element type filter housing,
get one from a defender 2.5TD, the filters are cheaper and the
housing is smaller and easier to locate than a TDi one, and more
than capable of handling the air flow for your engine. :)
