Skew gear?
DIR By: bubble

Greetings. ;D On tickover I'm getting a lot of grey/whitish
smoke which smells diesely, along with a regular puff like its
missing a bit. When its cruising there's virtually no smoke with
just a bit of black when working hard and a puff on overrun.
I've tried advancing the pump so it just starts to run knocky
but this doesn't help. It's got a recon pump/Injectors, new
timing parts with the valve timing set with a DTI etc so this
leads me to think that it could be the Skew gear under the
injector pump as this was not changed during the rebuild. Does
it sound like a worn skew gear to you? If they were cheap enough
I would just put a new one in to eliminate it but seeing as
there a few quid I thought I would ask first.

They don't wear really. More often they are twisted by POs (or
their friends in my case) to offset the effects of knackered
timing chains.
Worth bobbing it out.
If you find a cheap one or 2, let me know so I can get one to
replace the twisted one I have for when I replace timing gear

I pondered this on mine when building the engine. To be honest I
did not want to mess with the cam shaft and try to set the skew
gear up and left it alone.
I set the timing with the special tool but still had to advance
it to get it running better. My engine gave a regular puff like
it was missing but pulled well enough.
Then a Hot Spot broke and all went tits up........... Have you
had the head off ?

Reading Alex Bs comment. I was reffering to the drive from
camshaft to the skew gear. Not something I fancied messing with.

H'mmm, a virtually new skew gear (phosphor bronze?) went in a
box of bits to Calum's mate just last Sunday. What are they
priced at now? About £100 or so?

Sounds like a normal 2.25d
Look for some original promotional videos, even in those the
diesels puff smoke at idle and black smoke under load. I
wouldn't worry
Wear in the gear would just retard the timing so advancing
further would cure that, or using injector spill to time it
would, instead of the timing marks
A worn gear might be noisy, not a problem on a diesel, but
shoulnt affect running

the manual warns on placing it the right way up i dont konw if
it can cause anyproblems at all in its performance
i think one of my diesels had it turned up side down judging
from the wear it had gained on its end - a retailing circlip
from the drive gear got impressed in it

I had a smoking problem 20+ years ago with my S1 years which had
a 2.25 Diesel engine in (the S1 had the problem with smoking,
not me!)
Someone had rebuilt the engine, but not tightened the grub screw
which holds the drive gear bronze bushing into the block (you
have to remove the oil filter housing to get to the grub screw)
I fucked about for ages trying to find the problem, which only
became apparent when it rode up that far it jumped a tooth on a
downhill stretch and spluttered to a stop as a result
Once turned back a tooth and held down properly the smoking
stopped, so can only assume the pump timing was constantly being
varied by the gear running up and down?
An easy one to check
Good Luck
Ken.

If the brass bush has wear in it to allow the bush to float
up/down at idle speed that can be your prob,
I would has said just advance the pump timing but I see you have
done that,
The skew gear is a bugger to change with the engine in....better
access with the wing off...the prob is getting the grub screw in
and lined up.
