IIB steering play

So my IIB has almost all new steering components now and the
steering box has been checked, is in good condition and is
properly adjusted. Despite this where is quite a bit of wind up
between components when there is load on the rack.
I'm concerned about this at MOT.
from the MOT testers manual:
Free Play 1. With the road wheels on the ground pointing
straight ahead, lightly turn the steering wheel left and right
as far as possible without moving the road wheel. Check the
amount of free play at the circumference of the steering wheel.
Note: Play due to wear or maladjustment must not be confused
with apparent play due to the construction of the mechanism,
such as caused by the deflection of flexible joints or spring
compression
so, any opinions/ suggestions?

Just to give you ideas, loose steering relay - Chassis? Is the
steering box mount bolted down solid.
Chances are the steering box could be just worn on the center
section of the worm, you can adjust this but you need to try
keep it free (not tight) across its full range.

Narp - everything is nice and tight!
The steering box is adjusted up as far as it will go, before it
starts to get tight.

Have you changed the joints from box to relay? You know the ones
that no one likes to change, bit of a faff with rad panel in.
Did mine and took boat load of play out.

Should be six ball joints in all. 3 left hand thread, 3 right
hand. As already mentioned make sure steering box and relay are
secure including the ring underneath the relay. Get someone to
wiggle the steering wheel from side to side whilst you have a
good look from steering box all the way through to the
wheels.(with the vehicle on the ground)

how much play do you have at the steering wheel?
measured from straight ahead position, one inch of movement
(each way) before the wheels start to turn is usually
acceptable. unless he finds a knackered ball joint

:-? Only other thing I can think of is if a drop arm (or any
arm) has been loose in the past possibly and the splines are
worn and have play.
I think you need somebody to wiggle it whilst you check it out.

Strangely enough, Matt, I was only observing the tolerance of
mine, yesterday.
Having stood for a while, the gears were refusing to gate, so a
combination of the selector cover being loosened,
paraffin/diesel mix being squirted in (the oil will be changed
in time) and the engine tunnel being lifted off so I could
observe affairs...and it wasn't long before 1-2-3-4-R were
triumphantly located.
However, knowing there was/is play in the steering of 'Naked
Eye', I thought I'd take the opportunity to observe the steering
link as best I could from the cab, what with the rellay being
just to the left of one's arse; and I was relatively pleased
with what I saw, despite the fact it will cost some replacement
parts.
I was happy in that as soon as I turned the wheel, the top arm
on the relay began to turn, subsequently turning the bottom
drop-arm. So I'm satisfied the box is in relatively good shape
and also fancy the relay is serviceable. But there is about
15deg in either direction before I feel a bite of resistance,
and I think this is symptomatic of a vehicle with big wheels,
big turning circle and no power-steering, which is unhelpful at
the often low speeds of a FC. Basically, the TREs are vulnerable
to damage by wrenching and I think this is what I'll be relacing
to tighten things up. I fancy it may also be the basis of your
problems. It's certainly the preferred and least expensive fix.

Thanks thare Drew, put my mind to rest a bit!
I think the TRE on the nearside hub may need renewal and I've
managed to tighten out a little play found on the top of the
steering relay and 'upper' drop arm.
