breathing diesel

Hi all, just back from a mamouth trip oop narf to pick a 2 1/4
sw up that my mate bought from mark yellow of this parish Back
down to Devon. Mark said it had been standing for a couple of
months but started straight away. Very impressed! Any hoo got
out onto the motorway and started to get burning oil smoke in
the cab so pulled over. Looked under the bonnet and there was
oil everywhere. It was coming from the filler cap. Took it off,
cleaned it all up thinking it wasn't in right, rerouted the pipe
from it down the side of the engine rather than into the air
filter and off we went again. Got to Rotherham and it did it
again and covered my mates posh car in oil. Anyhoo, upshot is he
got relayed home and I traveled in comfort. Now do we reckon he
may have had a sticky ring or could it be the valve stem oil
seals? Either way it was breathing like an asmatic on forty
woodbines a day. Mark said it wasn't doing it the last time he
used it.
Other than that my mate is chuffed to buggery with it.
I'll get him to register on here once he sorts his shit out!

With the engine running and the oil filler cap removed is the
engine blowing out of the oil filler? ie is it pressurising?
Also is it burning oil or just blowing it out of the engine, is
exhaust blue(ish) or is there white smoke?
It sounds like back pressure to me which could be buggered
piston rings or a porous/cracked block/head
You didn't say whether it was petrol or diesel ( not that it
makes a difference really) but if it's petrol you should be able
to do a compression test which might guide in right direction
I would be tempted to pop the head off but wiser folk than I are
on the forum so defo worth waiting to get a few more opinions

blown into a pushrod tube.

No its not burning it, its definitely breathing. my first
thought was it was th hd Albert but it wasn't getting hot. Would
it stay at the right temp if the head gasket had blown there? We
are going to whip the head off soon but a direction is always
good!

my old engine did this but only when really thrashed (when was
it not) on the motorway doing at least 30 mph :haha: local
knowledgeble guy knew id been up the m6 when he looked under the
bonnet...common problem apparently!

It wouldn't affect temperature in the slightest. It will run
like that forever and a day, and if high speeds/revs are never
used, it won't use a deal of oil either. Basically, if this is
the fault, it might have been like it for years, unknown about.
Compression basically escapes into the pushrod tube, with
subsequent crankcase pressurisation, and inevitable "wet engine"
problems. For the cost of a head set, it's worth a try, plus it
means you can check the bores and valve seats while you're at
it. 3-4 hours work and about £10-15.

I took Albert Ross advice when I rebuilt my 2.25diesel and went
to the trouble of removing injectors after warm up an re
torquing the head. Did it again after 500 miles no problems
wheel worth the effort, push rod side tightened up a fair bit.

I'd agree with the "common problem" answer. Most 2.25 diesels
will breathe hard when worked hard. All of mine did, including a
full Turner engine. The answer is to route the breather into a
catch tank (or the chassis rail).
If, however, it's particularly bad, I'd suspect the valve-stem
oil seals first, gasket second, gummed up rings/worn bores
third. Depends how deep you want to go to sort the problem, but
be aware you'll likely not cure it completely, no matter what
you try!

Thanks for advice as always folks. I'll get him to get a gasket
set and we'll investigate soon!
