That's what I did with my Series 1 (strip the top layer paint
off). Worth a go. The paint Rover used is proper kwality I tell
thee and comes up a treat, a bit of weathering adds to the
appeal.

Patina every time for me but needs to be even across whole motor
although I don't mind them having different coloured panels so
long as the motor is loved and cherished that's the main thing
for me

Nine is a mix of dark greens.. .well aged and has at some point
been blue and in places it is showing slightly through... the
rear o/s quarter panel has been painted recently ( Shocking mis
match) but I left it for the day at my local paint supplier and
they have mixed up a drab / faded /lack of shine colour which is
a perfect blend... so it can be done.....
