Glow plug light....

I've just upgraded my old curly type glow plugs to the parallel
probe type. Thing is when I turn the key to pre heat the light
comes on as it should but it stays on when I'm cranking the
engine over whereas it didn't before. It does go out when I let
go of the key and the engine's running though, is this right?

Mine didn't do that when I made the change. It behaved as it did
before the change.
If I was going to suggest a cause I would point the finger at
the ignition barrel, but I have on so many occasions been wrong.

I think it depends which type of ignition switch you have and
which terminal it is wired from, some terminals disconnect
during cranking in order to enable all available power to route
to the starter, this is usually to disconnect fan wipers and
the like, I don't think it is any disadvantage to have the glow
plugs powered up during cranking especially during winter,
unless your battery is weak.

Isn't it the difference between a petrol and diesel ignition
switching think the petrol has a live during cranking to feed
the coil which then becomes the stop solenoid feed when you
change to a diesel.
Shouldn't cause any problems in the long run so long as the
relay knocks off the power once the engine has started

hi
mine still has the old coily thing and still heats and when
starting it still stayed on. Now it does not stay on cos i
messed with the barrel. my ignition barrel or key is on way out
as some time few years ago it just started missing the final
stage of twist - lights on, heating but no cranking. so by
passed the starter thing by means of a push button switch.

what does that mean ? dont you turn the diesel off by pulling
the stop cable. ???

Could be the Ignition switch is on the way out then as I've just
realized the steering lock isn't engaging.... :2mo5pow:

If you do a diesel conversion with a stop solenoid you need
power to the solenoid or there won't be any fuel getting to the
injector pump. When the conversion is from a petrol engine the
simplest route to do this is use +ve terminal to the coil as
this is the one that switches power on and off for the engine to
spark
If your engine had a manual engine stop then it is not needed

Since Bubba has changed from pigtail glow plugs to 'modern'
types ; it would be fairly safe to assume ( that's done it!!)
that its a 2.25d and therefore is probably on a pull stop .

sorry puddle jumper i didn't think between the lines of the many
modern diesels going through the series engine bay.. i am stuck
in the 1950s tech :\
