I like this, I'll keep an eye on this thread . There was
a restored one at last summer's Hebden Bridge vintage weekend.

I served my apprenticeship at Star Bodies, Spencer Street,
Hollinwood, Oldham in the early seventy's and (helped) built a
quite a few VA's they were as you know all hand built, and not
one the same. All the GRP wheel arches, roof, bonnet where made
in the top of the workshop, with all the wood work done in the
bottom of the workshop and all hand coach painted. The van was a
fantastic job to learn your trade, because as i said every VA
was bespoke. In the back of the van was a "star" plate, this was
actually a square piece of GPR with a star and number so in
case of a accident records would show what tradesmen build it,
and if he was still there would be asked to look at the damage.
Star Bodies was a brilliant place for a trade( i am still a
coach builder now? ). Good luck with your project, Graham.

Brave man taking on that, my main hobby is vintage bikes and the
missus has several sense of humour failures over the years. Had
"Cats Arse Face" for about a month when the last project came
home. I thought she moaned enough about the Land Rover!

Interesting stuff Graham, I shall have to look through the pile
of bodywork next to the chassis and see if I can find the
       remains of that plate.
Tony, I've had no luck yet with contacting the owner of the
other one. Just been too busy with the house to be honest. I was
up at the farm last week to check the sizes of the wheel nuts
and other large nuts/bolts to see whether they're AF or
Whitworth, turns out there's both. My brother-in-law is retiring
and winding up his tool shop, so I had a narrow window to get
some 3/4" drive sockets and whatever other stuff I might need at
"family" rates before the doors closed. I've now spent way too
much money with him! Still, it'll all get used eventually. Got
an architect lined up to do the plans for the new
garage/workshop/hardstanding area and sort out the necessary
planning/building regs. Hopefully I can get the hardstanding
done first, so the lorry can get moved home ASAP. There's space
for it here now, but moving it about is going to be a major
ball-ache, so I'd really like to get it's home sorted first, and
then it can get slotted straight in there the day it finally
       arrives.
divie, believe me, I've had that face a fair bit over the last
       few months!

       Right. Mini update.
Checking my original post, I went to the farm and started this
thread on the 1st of October last year. That's nearly a year of
my decade's worth of project timescale gone already, and I've
       not lifted a finger!
So, I am, tonight, here and now, setting myself a deadline of
getting it moved to here before the end of the month. I don't
know if it's going to be possible, but I'm going to give up on
the idea of waiting for the hardstanding, and start to call
around to see about quotes and timescales for getting it moved.
       ;D

       Update...
Had a text Wednesday from the farmer, to say that his labourers
moved it the day before thinking they were being helpful, and
that there was "some damage". and he asked me to come and see it
to decide if I still want it.
After a fretty couple of days, I spent the morning at the farm
today, surveying the damage. I shouldn't really be cross, as
Craig is giving me the lorry, and I have had months to sort out
moving it, but I am a bit gutted. I really wish he'd let me know
it needed moving, or asked me to move it for him as whoever did
it did so with the minimum amount of sympathy I can imagine.
The front mudguards had both fallen off; fortunately damage to
them was minimal, but what remained of their mountings is toast.
The sump was holed with a forklift, used to drag it out
sideways, but I'd never planned on rebuilding it in any case. It
just means it's scrap, rather than something I might have been
able to sell on. A lot of the surviving cab floor and all of the
steps both sides are gone, as is the rearmost loaded timber
(which was rotten, but there the last time I visited; all of
which would have ended up in the skip, but would have been
       valuable patterns.
The worst bit though, is the same forklift managed to bend the
rearmost section of chassis, back from the last crossmember. I
should be able to straighten it. It's not a biggie, but it's a
whole lot of work for a moment's carelessness.

I've managed to remove the front wings and remains of the
bumper, and have brought them home, along with a few bits of the
original bodyside panelling. I don't plan reusing much, if any,
of the panels, so left the majority for Craig to weigh in. I've
kept the one bearing the unladen weight marking and the two that
have "Canterbury" written across them. I can feel some "shed
art" coming on with those, and the rest I'll reuse if I can for
small bits of panelling etc.. To be honest, most of it wasn't
       worth saving anyway.

  HTML http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/glenanderson/JOY430D/IMG_1818_zps3e852fb2.jpg[/img]
With the wings removed, and the chassis finally out from among
all the brambles, I got my first proper look at it. It is
saveable, just, but really wants doing before very much longer.
One of the crossmembers is a little thin and would really
benefit from being replaced rather than plated, and the front
chassis dumb iron near the passenger side front spring mount is
pretty bad. This is the area I mean:
  HTML http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/glenanderson/JOY430D/IMG_1811_zpsb23d59db.jpg[/img]
You can't really see in that pic, heres one from above/inside:
  HTML http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt313/glenanderson/JOY430D/IMG_1812_zps5a8ba53e.jpg[/img]
It is, to be brutally honest, past any sensible saving. As I'm
not sensible, the only caveat I've put on taking it is that I
can get it transported for less than I'd get for it if I cut my
losses and weighed it in. I'd guess there's about three tons of
scrap there, which would see about £350 ish, so that's my limit,
give or take. I've been in touch with a local haulier that has a
lorry with a big enough HIAB to load and unload it, and I'm
waiting to hear back from them once they've seen the pictures of
it and of the access at the farm and here.
The other stumbling block will be registering it. The old
logbook hasn't turned up anywhere, so I'm going to have to throw
myself on the mercies of the DVLA to get it registered. I will
have to be doing all of that before I lay a spanner on it; I
don't want to put a shitload of time and effort into it, only to
find it ends up on a "Q"!
I also think that I'll have to make a proper effort to track
down the owner of the other one nearby, as it looks like I may
well need chassis cuts to make a proper job of repairing this
one. It might be that it makes more real sense to use this one
for spares instead if the other is better structurally.
The good news is that all the wheels went round with no dramas,
as did the prop. The steering works and the springs and axles
are all OK as far as I can tell.
Whatever, things are on the move at last. :)

looks remarkably solid for how long its stood out in the

Ta Jackual. I wish we had your dry climate, I've been reading
your Black Sheep thread with interest!
Having slept on the issue, I'm going to get mine home first,
then make an immediate start on the process of getting it
registered. The lorry will stay as it is, untouched, until any
inspections etc have been carried out. I will probably invest in
a few gallons of clear Waxoyl and give it an all-over squirt to
stop any further deterioration, then keep it under a tarp, but
that's it. If registering it presents me with an insurmountable
hurdle, then this chassis will get stripped for spares and I'll
start following up leads on a couple of others I know of.
If I manage to contact the owner of the one in Sittingbourne,
he's willing to sell and that one has a better chassis, then
I'll have a bit of a dilemma on my hands, but I'll cross that
bridge when I get to it.
Then there's the pair of them lying in the yard in Lincolnshire,
which is a long way away, but that's my next avenue of enquiry
       if all else fails.
