Alternator question

No charging and no red light on the dash. The dash light bulb
was fine so I assumed a broken wire somewhere. I had a spare
alternator so, out of curiosity I plugged the connector into it
and the red light now lit up.
The fault is obviously in the alternator but is it likely to be
something I can fix? There was no obvious loose wire.
I fitted the new alternator and got a voltage reading of 16.4
volts. This seems very high and I'm worried it might cook the
battery. Even with every electrical thing on and with the engine
barely ticking over, it still read 14.5 volts.
I should 'fess up that this wasn't on one of my leafers but on
the allegro. I bought the alternator for the land over but it's
the same one as the allegro (I think :rolleye0012:)

my alternator used to kick out 14 odd volts but not 16 as i can
remember

Sounds like the rectifier is goosed on that alternator.

Which one divie? The one that doesnt put the red light on or the
one that puts out 16+ volts?

:-? 14.5v is about right when charging, but 16.4 is a bit out
of range, my money is on the voltage reg being faulty.
Have a look at this it may help, it may not.

Cheers EK, I've had a look at your guide and might have a go at
rebuilding the one I took off. Feels like there shouldn't be
much wrong with it.

Yes they are generally something very simple, new reg brushes
etc and it will be good for 100k.

Although I think it is a rectifier problem i have not rebuilt an
alternator for years.
My best mate is a Lucas trained auto electrician and if I so
much as ask a question about something electrical he gives me an
answer or sorts the job for me.

Mustard mitt I haven't fixed these yet but the one on the car
doesn't seem to have caused any problems so far even though it
generates 16+ volts. I'll assume that one has the dodgy voltage
regulator.
What could be wrong with the one that doesn't charge and yet
doesn't put the red charge light on?
