New dizzy - smoke and a back fire

I decided to fit an electronic dizzy to my 2.25 petrol, because
I don't seem to have time to fiddle with points anymore. Got one
from simonbbc, with a new coil. I've installed it, the coil,
new HT leads and plugs. Engine started, which I was pleased
about because I'd never changed a dizzy before. But, when I
drove it there's no power - can't get it to go faster than 30
and there is a bit of a backfire and I get a puff of black(ish)
smoke from the exhaust when I push hard on the accelerator.
Is this all to do with the timing or is something else amiss?
Also, the instructions said something about making sure the
resistance of the coil is less than 1.5 ohms. How do I check
this, and for someone who doesn't know anything electrical (or
mechanical for that matter (to give you an idea about how
gormless I am, it took some earnest googling to understand what
TDC meant!)), what does this actually mean?
       Thanks Mike

Timing is out, best get a timing gun and learn how to use it,
most hook to no. 1 cylinder point gun at timing mark as the
spark is sent to the plug the gun will flash a bright light and
when pointed at the timing mark it will appear to be stationary
now you can compare the timing mark on the pulley to the static
mark and see what the difference is.
Have a watch of this to get some idea.

Might be an idea to contact simonbbc to see if they suggest if
the timing angle is different from standard.

Thank you Roveerman, most appreciated. I shall have a go later
today using a timing gun that I inherited from my Grandad.

Similar to what I have at the moment. I wonder if the timing
light resolved it? I did set mine up at 3 degrees btdc before
       attempting to drive. donk
