Has BFgoodridge ever changed the design of their all terrain TA
tyres?
I have been slowly purchasing them off ebay.. 3 of which have
come with white lettering on & tread that runs slightly up the
side walls the last one i have bought is branded the same
but is without white lettering ( not that i am fussed this is
hidden away on the inside ) & the tread doesn't wrap around the
side walls.

Look for a code on the sidewall that resembles this:

The translation is thus:

So the tyre above was made in the 51st week of 2007.
Tyres made before 2000 may differ like so:

In which case the final 3 digits still show the date, but not
which decade. The above tyre was made in the 40th week of the
8th year of the decade, but there is no way of knowing which
decade....... so if you are buying pre-2000 tyres with a
timeless tread then proceed carefully so as not to end up with
an ancient brick-hard deathtrap!

the dot code ends in 1486 well those are the last 4
punched/mounded movable type letters on it
the lack of triangle suggests maybe 86?

You've got me stumped there, as if it IS from '86 then it
shoudnt have a 4-digit code - and being a US DOT coding system
it should be a universal format for all makes unless its a tyre
model never sold in America (being a BFG, it was of course)
Any chance of a quick photo of the code you're looking at and
the surrinding area of the sidewall to see what's what?

Ah! It looks to me from the photo that the last 3 digits have a
very slight but definite moulded circular indent round them.
This is as opposed to some of the others that look similar , but
(from what I make of studying the picture) just have a slight
discoloured halo around them. Highlighting the date stamp digits
in a circle is common practice as sometimes bits of the
preceding code are numerical not alphabetical, so it avoids
confusion. If I'm correct and only the last 3 are marked as
such, the code for that tyre is 486, or the 48th week of the 6th
year. I cant tell if it is 86 or 96 as I dont think all tyres
had the triangle to denote the 1990s.
Either way, at worst it is 27 years old but even at best it's 17
years old, so in my personal opinion I would make it into a rope
swing or a tyre wall rather than put it anywhere near my truck.
