       Today I've mostly been...

...welding up a modification to my landrover.
Background is - with an LT77 installed in a regular 109"
chassis, and with the engine mounts in the normal place,
everything fits, but the handbrake drum is very close to the
crossmember behind it. This means you can't get the handbrake
drum off with the gearbox in situ - you have to split the engine
and box, and lower the box out. Not ideal, if you need to get in
       there.
A couple of days ago, a problem with sheared prop-shaft studs
meant I needed to get in there - pronto. After weighing up the
various conceivable options (including undoing the engine mounts
and lifting the engine nose, while lowering the back of the
box), I lost my temper, and reached for the gas torch.
       :smiley-furious:
A few moments later, and Bitsa's chassis had one less
crossmember than it did previously, and access to the handbrake
was rather better. However, I wasn't sure if there perhaps
wasn't a reason LR had installed that cross-member, and so I
felt that it probably wanted putting back.
I didn't fancy welding it back in where it had come from - as I
would struggle to see the funny side if I had to gas it out
       again in the future.
I thought about moving it back 4", like the 6 cylinder models
are, but wasn't wild about the idea.
Then I though the best option was to make it removable - rather
       like military gearbox crossmembers.
This Saturday saw it replaced, and I must admit I'm quite
pleased with the results - I'd probably do the same mod to a
109" chassis before installing a LT77 in future.
       Here be the pictures...

The aftermath of a visit from the gas torch.

I got the lads who were doing some shotblasting at work to clean
       up the remains for me.

Several hours work to get to this pic.
4 bits of mounting angle cut and drilled.
4 crush tubes cut and welded inside the crossmember.
Two end plates cut, and welded onto the crossmember.
4 long M16 bolts raided from the stores (130mm long if you
       really want to know).
Oh, and quite a lot of the really poor original OEM welding on
the crossmember ground out and replaced.
  HTML http://images.serieslandrover.co.uk/crossm5.jpg
And installed under the truck, plus a coat of paint. The angle
iron mounts are welded on both sides onto the chassis. I had to
be pretty neat welding down the inside of the angles so the weld
       didn't get in the way!
I was going to take a picture with the crossmember not fitted,
but got distracted and forgot - it was quite late at night when
I finished (to be fair, I didn't start till well after lunch).

Good work / idea John, but I think we need more pics from your
       workshop

I hope that if in a worse case scenario that you had a crash,
your chassis won't have been compromised by removing the
original unit. Insurance companies are lethal when they get
Inspection engineers to check over vehicles.

It's all part of a declared engine/gearbox conversion as far as
       insurance goes.
I'm fairly sure it's held on better now than it ever was
originally - the original (genuine LR, probably made by GKN)
welds had to be seen to be believed.
I'm also fairly sure if I have a crash bad enough to pull this
crossmember apart, dealing with the insurance company will be
       someone else's problem.

I'm working on that! I'm taking photos of the new boiler I'm
currently building (for Hudswell-Clarke 1238 of 1917, being
restored by MRT) with a view to posting a "how a boiler is made"
thread up on here when it's finished (hopefully in the next
       month or so)

Brilliant execution of the mod there, a lot neater and more
simple than other attempts I've seen. In fact, I'm going to
print this and keep it as mine will be getting the same
treatment during its overhaul, sod taking the 'box out the top
if I ever want to change a clutch again!
