       Smallest 2.5 Diesel starter motor
   DIR By: parksy64

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Having fit dramas due to my tubular manifold; so what is the
smallest 2.5 Diesel starter motor that I can use with the sherpa
flywheel housing, Jim's diesel flywheel etc?????
Is there a powerlite starter, or a shorty Tdi one? Part number
if possible as I need to try a track one down ASAP :smilewide:
       Will this one work?

Unless the sherpa flywheel housing is different(I don't think it
is), I think that all the diesel starters are the same fitting -
       I.e. you can swap starters from a 2.0d, 2.25D, 2.5na, 2.5td,
200tdi and 300tdi, and they will all fit in the same place,
although some starters will be physically too bulky to fit with
some manifold combinations (I know that a 2.25D starter with
       300tdi manifolds doesn't fit!).
I think the most compact starters as the bosch ones found on 200
and 300 tdi engines. They also seem quite a bit more powerful
       that the earlier starters.

FWIW I replaced the massive 2.25 starter with a Valeo item I
took off a 2.5 in a Pilot (I think) and it was a lot smaller and
       a lot spinnier. Win win.

Okay, bone question, is that an LDV pilot?
If that's the case then I could probably have found a Peugeot/
citroen/ fiat one that works here- bollocks! Next time

Yes LDV but I don't know for sure the pug was the same in terms
of starter, flywheel combo. It was a rover engine it came off.
Maybe it was a freightrover not a pilot, if that makes any
       difference.

I *think* the pug engine(s) found in pilots are a different
kettle of fish, and I'd be surprised if it used a LR type
       starter.
The older freightrovers had a LR 2.5 (i.e. a sherpa engine)
IIRC, so not surprising if the starter was the same pattern. If
you buy a new starter for any engine in the LR diesel series,
they normally give you a compact tdi type one, so I'd guess such
a starter had gone onto Rog's freightrover at some point...

       Cool cheers.
Sorted now with a Disco 200/300 Tdi one; NAD500210. Ordered a
Bosch one and got a shitpart :rolleye0012:

Can a diesel be started on the starter handle?
