Galvanising a bulkhead

Have just acquired a really solid bulkhead and thought I would
galvanise it, might stop it turning to shit in a couple of
years!!
Have heard you need to put it in a frame to stop it twisting
when being hot dipped and wondered if any of you guys have done
this and what you did?Cheers

I didn't on mine, there doesn't seem to be any serious
distortion, the feet were about 3/4 inch closer together after
dipping but were levered back into place with a crow bar.
If I did another I'd probably make a brace piece to go between
the feet, I wouldn't have had it sandblasted as a skim of filler
was needed on the areas which show when painted and assembled,
the repair welds attract excess galv so I would have ground them
back a little further.

filling them with bathroom silicon keeps out the galv but can't
vouch for this.

Bonjour,
Had several Bulkheads & chassis galvanized - never a frame and
no real problems with distortion or twisting.
Cleaning out excess zinc is a pain but that's about it. Building
"tolerances" with Land Rover are so big that they're a laugh.
Sometimes, the bulkhead needs a bit of help from ratchet straps
or the likes to have it take the bolts and supports but that's
about it.
We powdercoat the chassis afterwards - but that is a different
process in Holland than it is in the UK : much better quality.

I galvanised mine with no problems but it did need a little
straightening with ratchets afterwards. As mentioned earlier
regarding the vent pins you will also need new vent screen
meshes. Definitely worthwhile as to do properly only cost about
£50. ;D

I had no problems with mine at all, the feet never moved and
there no distortion that i can see the door all line up as does
everything else.

Do you need to drill any new holes to let air out when it's
dipped?

Not on mine i didnt there are plenty of holes in the design, the
hardest bit was drilling the vent hinge holes out but as been
said a wee bit of silicone may do the job i used a drill bit in
some mole grips and that did the job, and get the taps ready
before it goes so you know you have the correct ones.

Might just make a frame to keep bottom mountings right and will
try silicone in vent hinge panels, was quoted £42 to hot dip it
so long as I prepped it, guess its just paint stripping and
making sure all rust is cleaned off?
