12v sockets and a radio

Time to bring my SIII crashing into the 1990s, possibly even the
2000s; the hacked-out oval part of the SIII dash tray looks like
a candidate for a bit of re-upholstery and a couple of 12v
sockets for satnav :gay: and phone :gay: but how best to wire
these up? I was thinking straight back to the solenoid +ve and
an inline fuse? If so, what size cable and fuse and that?
Also, while I'm chewing about, how about a radio? I'll need a
housing for underneath the dash tray I think and should I wire
it similarly? Finally there are two speakers and wires from the
past and the aerial connection. Will these fit a new fangled
radio or will there be a certain amount of chew with a
multiplug?

Mine are both wired to the fuse box, but I'm on a non standard
box, solenoid with an in line fuse is OK but you run the risk of
flattening the battery with the radio, modern radios have a feed
from the ignition switch as well as a permanent live to avoid
this happening.
Adapter plugs are available to wire existing speakers and live
feeds to new radios.

Going to do the same to Ralph once i'm back, center panel has
been bodged and covered up before so looking at fitting one of
these panels

debender radio mount to fit it above the switches but dunno if
it'll fit but then again cant see why not

I know you guys have motivation to cover up holes on the dash.
I bought a cigarette lighter extension socket similar to >

then chopped off
the male end of it & wired the cable onto the back of the
existing 12v dash plugs. i origionally used to plug it in
every time i wanted to use it but it looked ugly so now it
neetly sits in the dash tray with a wire going off into the
dash

If you're not bothered about having a CD player (and lets face
it, with many better ways of storing music, who wants expensive
CDs rattling around in a Landy), you can get head units that are
half depth, which may fit better into the dash of a Series 3
than a more conventional unit. There were some on ebay recently
with RDS, Bluetooth, USB/SD etc for under £100.
I've got a JVC unit without a CD (albeit full depth) and that
was only £80. Bluetooth hands free and all that jazz, as well as
ipod connectivity/control and that was about £80 delivered.

I got a Phillips CEM2000 for £30 from ebay not long ago, DAB,
USB, CD.
Apparently these weren't popular and many were returned as
faulty because the have a tendency to forget the DAB stations
every couple of weeks, mine did this only once and hasn't done
it since I updated the firm ware.

back of the FFrock ...
