Sorry mate ....twas a late night in the rain last night fitting
a new water pump to Tracey's TDi using "Smurf spunk" on the
gaskets

So with a little help of elbow grease and stillsons I managed to
get the pin loose... tried different positions, even all the way
loose and the bugger keeps flapping which lead me to believe
that the trouble is in the catch.
It seems the catch doesn't lock properly (hard to see with the
bonnet closed). I will try to get it out and clean it properly
and grease it up again. Will be a job for later as it started to
pour here and I couldn't get the bolts loose.

Mine never shut on the first slam until I found the nut Toby

Doesn't the "top nut" govern the compression of the spring and
thus how tightly the bonnet closes ....i seem to remember that
the "rope" seal on the top of the bulkhead has a degree of input
into how rattly the whole shabang is ????

The bonnet pin fell off my series not so long ago - which left
me with a bit of a problem. A local motor factors had a set of
Stainless Steel bonnet pins, the type that pull out and lock
over - £7. Combined with a seal along the bulkhead it dosent
move atall. Highly recommend, someone will properly turn their
nose up at them - but i'am sold.

Probably; I just fiddled with it a bit and it seemed to do the
job. One of those "I wonder what would happen if I press that
button" moments. ;D

Funny you mention... I still haven't fitted the rope seal on the
top of the frontpanel after painting Alfred green...
Still think the catch doesn't operate properly, the lower catch
doesn't always click in so to speak. Time to get it out and give
it a proper clean I guess.
