       Allmakes Track Rod Ends
   DIR By: Time Bandit

Got some track rod ends to change on my Lightweight, no problem
as such, but what 'brand' do I go for? I could go OEM but for
the mileage I do it's probably not worth the cost so I was think
more along the 'budget' end of the market...aye tight arse git I
know but I can get nearly a full set for the price of a couple
       of OEM!!
So what do I go for, Shitpart get automatically dismissed as
shite, 'cos they usually are, so they are off the list, which
kinda just leaves Allmakes or Bearmach. Allmakes are slightly
cheaper for what it's worth, but what are better or do they all
come out of the same Chinky/Paki/Indian/similar factory anyhow?
The other option is go to the local motor factors and get them
from there, usually a 'First Line' one but they are nearly as
expensive as OEM whilst looking as cheap and nasty as something
       from Shitpart.
Any opinions or is a TRE just a TRE and is it worth even going
along the Shitpart option? My current thinking was just to go
for Allmakes unless anyone can think of a reason not to...ie,
       they're as crap as Shitpart!!

As you say, its sometimes difficult to justify OEM prices, I've
used pattern parts without any hassel (I can't remember the
brand) but I've bought from well known suppliers!! and local
factors. I also don't do a big mileage in my Landy.
The end of the day its down to how deep your pockets are.

Aye, think I'll just get the Allmakes ones, they are pretty
cheap and even if they do turn out to be crap with the 500 or so
miles a year I do it'll probably be a couple of years before I
notice!! Another plus at the end of the day is that they ain't
Shitpart ones!! I like to use OEM parts if I can but in this
case it's hard to justify the cost at virtually 3 times the
price...and a one in a Land Rover box is about 6 times more
       costly!! :o

Lemforder from Paddocks. These are genuine/OEM, I bought a pair
from en ex-military surplus place for the Snatch and they were
Lemforder with NSN stickers etc all over them. 9.50+vat each
sounds reasonable, I wouldn't trust my life to a TRE that cost
       3.74+vat.

That was my first thought...how good is a £3.00 TRE but then
again I've not really heard of too many people being splattered
yet 'cos one has failed? I'm sure some have failed at some point
but then again I'm sure an OEM one has failed too...maybe just
not as often? I suppose you pays yer money and takes yer
       chances?

I don't reckon crashbangdeath failure will be your problem with
the el-cheapo ones Mike; more likely the boots will perish and
split before the year is up and you'll have to replace them all
       again  ::)

You're right, I've not heard specifically of cheap TREs causing
a problem but there seemed to be a spate of track rod/drag link
failures some years ago that made it into the forums/mags and
I've been a bit nervous of cheap'n'cheerful shite since.

       Aye that's a possibility I suppose...especially the amount of
time my steering usually moves in a year!! :haha:
I got the Allmakes ones today, made in Chinkyland, no surprise
there...what ain't made there nowadays!! They look ok, well as
ok as a TRE can look I guess! They actually use a castle nut and
split pin too which was a bit of a surprise as nowadays most
       seem to use nylocs.
I suppose time will now tell how wise a decision I made!! :)

I'm with Noel on the Lemforder, and I'd also suggest QH as a
       close second too.
One or the other (can't remember which) has a grease-nipple,
which is a damned handy thing to have when setting the tracking
       to the c-to-c mm.
