Advice on tyre sizes!

Am in the process of making my 1957 series 1 roadworthy and I am
at the stage where I need to decide what size of tyre to put on
it... :-?
At the moment its got the original 6.50's on, but they look a
little small!
A friend has suggested 7.50 16 general super all grips which I
think would look good ;D
My question really is would 7.50's be too big for it? Or would
7.00's be a better option?
Any help would be greatly appreciated :thumbs:

Going from 6.50 to 7.50 and keeping 16" rim is the equivalent of
about a 7% "gear up". That is you'll be travelling 7% faster at
the same revs and speedo reading that you were on 6.50s. I
suppose that means the engine will have to work 7% harder to
give you the torque.
I have never done this on a S1, but have on other 4x4s (by more
than 7% as well) and I can say the pros outweigh the cons!
I wouldn't expect changing from 6.50 to 7.50 to have much effect
on steering lock either.

I run on 205/16 all terrain which are ok but I do think 750s
look nice and raise the gearing a bit as a bonus.

750s look the cheese on a S1, especially an 88" as the
proportions are spot on. I assume you have the original 5" wide
rims with the 650s on? I put my originals (600s) in the corner
of the yard and just got a set of 750s on 5.5" LWB rims.

Hello bud,if you can get your hands on some Michelin XPC 7.50s
you will not only have a good all round tyre but a tyre of the
finest quality.I took some "Carlos Fandango" Insa Saharas off my
S3 and the difference was amazing.I am not always up to the
"nads" in mud but the XPCs are more than up to most scabbling
about.BEWARE of KNOBBLY FEVER !!! :thumbs:

Thanks for the replies chaps :) seen a couple photos of S1's
with 7.50's and they do look spot on! Think they are what it
needs :thumbs:
The rims are definitely original so I presume they are 5"
I'm not too bothered about the gearing increase...with its 2.0
diesel I don't think I will be setting any speed records anytime
soon ;D

Goodyear G90s are a relatively well mannered tyre on tarmac, as
well as (apparently) being the "shizz" on the sloppy bits. The
central "Z-tread" carries the carcass and rolls quietly in
comparison to the block tread type tyres. Worth considering. Of
course, we have all heard how dangerous they are, so you will
end up particularly dead if you fit them. I have them on my 109
and have died a number of times this year. Of course, I got
better.

If you want to keep a relatively "traditional" look then the
Fedima Maxima is a radial version of the SAG you mention and
comes in 7.50.

Mine are smidge over 750 and work/look great on the 86". Just
get decent quality stuff if you can to avoid crap handling
