Overdrive! Are they worth the effort

My 2a runs on standard 2.25 petrol and 750 tyres
Would fitting an overdrive work well and improve cruising speed,
are they worth the money

Should improve cruising speed and economy. Not to mention noise
levels.
Had one on my series 2 2.5 na diesel and loved it.

Not sure about the noise levels - most whine like a wife.
But economy and better cruising - deffo

If you haven't got one you have to weigh up how much you use
your truck. If you don't use it much then it may not be worth
buying an OD on cost grounds alone. They are nice to have though
for cruising speeds.

Won't run a diesel land rover without one. mine is almost
silent as is my spare one ( or the one i'm saving for when i get
my 2a ambulance one day) Ask to try it before you buy one too,
when i got one of mine the bloke said take one off the shelf
over there and try it, if its ok pop the cash in on monday :o

Depends what you do with it. I've got overdrives on all three of
mine that are currently on the road and wouldn't be without
them. Overdrives don't really increase the cruising speed, a
2.25 petrol is good for an average 70mph and the overdrive won't
make it go any faster, unless downhill with the wind behind it.
They do drop the revs by 28% or thereabouts, so 70mph equates to
a tad over 50mph revs-wise with the overdrive engaged. Be
warned, Faireys can be screamers. The first one on the ambulance
was so awful we couldn't bear to use it much, that's now been
swapped for one that is silent-ish. I've sold a couple on eBay
and both have fetched just shy of £400. As I remember Paddocks
bought the last stock from Superwinch 15-20 years ago and they
were knocking them out £459 if I remember correctly. Expensive
is a subjective term, but prices have been stable for some time
so chances are if you advertise it right you'd get back what you
paid for it if you find its not for you.

personally i would nt bother, many of them are worn out and
overpriced plus parts are ridiculous prices as well. So you
could end up paying silly money for a worn out lump! when i had
the prima in the s1 i did nt think it was much better for
cruising, always changing in and out of it. I ve gone rr diffs
and im well happy with them, when off road i wish i had a lower
gear sometimes but its not that bad especially when they are
cheap as!

I wouldn't bother unless you want to cruise above 55mph
I run my 2.25 petrol at that for long distances with no problem
- no noticeable economy benefit on my Lr at that speed
Running faster and economy goes through the floor without the
OD, where 65 is still tolerable with the OD
Doesn't make much difference to top speed
On a diesel I think maybe needed more as they dont like revs and
economy suffers with revs more (as does the drivers hearing) -
but the problem is getting a good one
unless you can test drive it I wouldn't bother
