wing tops

I'm nearing the end of the rebuild of my series 3 88 (hopefully
start a thread soon from start to end with pics). My question
though, i have fitted a soft top but will change back to hard
top woth roof rack every now and then so some strengthened wing
tops would be useful both for attaching the canvas and loading
the rack, however, i hate chequerplate tops. Is there anything
else suitable that is easily available? I've had a look at the
carawagons that have wing tops fitted, i.e.:

what were they made of?

The 'decking rubber' on the wings and bonnet of some Carawagons
was indeed just that, a rubber sheet to stop slipping off the
wings and breaking your neck. As far as I know, there was no
strengthening to the wings themselves, just the addition of this
rubber mat (which, on John's old motor pictured, was a creamy
coloured ridged affair)

Off topic, but I've never noticed that before, a one piece
windscreen on a series.
Was that a standard fitment on carawaggons?

on another note, ive got some ffr wings and they have
strengthening stuff under them. could be transfered into
existing wings

I don't think so, I think that it was a modification done
elsewhere, but its possible that Searles picked up on it. For
some reason, I recall that the Simmonites were involved in the
one piece screen, but I'm happy to be corrected.

In my pile of bits I have a one piece screen. Can't remember
where it came from, but if anyone wants
it, usual OLLR rates apply.

Thanks for the replies, i'll keep looking around for something
suitable, maybe look at attaching something underneath to
strengthen the tops.

If you decide to build in some strengthening, remember the
effects bimetallic corrosion has on birmabright.

Well spotted!
It was an option on Carawagons - they offered it as a "panoramic
windscreen"

Yep,the panoramic screen was an option, as Stu shows on t'other
thread :thumbs:
And as Calum says, there was a vinyl/plastic/rubber sheet with a
ridges/woven pattern which could be fitted to Carawagon wing
tops, so you could stand on the wings to load the roof rack.
It's interesting that www.simoncars have claimed the pictures of
John's Carawagon :-?
