When I engage the overdrive usually when on the motorway it
jumps into neutral after a few minutes can anybody tell me what
may be wrong with it , it does howl quite a bit.

Possibly a collapsed thrust washer at the back of the input
shaft, causing both noise and excess endfloat which will cause
selection issues. More than likely just down to the selector
mechanism being out of adjustment, however. Remove the top cover
on the overdrive and check the movement of the selector fork in
relation to the selector shaft - there should be none. Best way
is to operate the lever with the top off and see what happens.
Also pay attention to the brass slipper pads on the selector
ring - these wear out and can cause selector issues too. Is the
gear selection on the unit quite positive, or does it feel
       sloppy and a bit vague?

The selection is positive but can be a bit of a crunch.
