Running out of go.

Good morning,
My 2.25 diesel this morning seems to be dieing.
Can anybody help with possible causes? The symptoms are;
It gently seemed to be under powered, it kept on going but felt
like I only was pressing half way of the accelerator.
Slight smell of oil,
Stalls when not being accelerated.
A bit noisy.
So its like it only runs at 75%
What could this be? Head gasket? valve seals?
How do i problem solve this? is it head off job/ rebuild?
Bit of a long shot but thanks anyway.

How long since it was serviced ie diesel filter, air filter etc?

What colour is/was the exhaust smoke when this happens? Black =
insufficient air/overfuelling. White = unburnt fuel/late
injection. Blue = oil. Grey = normal. All of the above =
fucked. I have seen the air filter hoses collapse under suction,
restricting air flow... take it off and try again. Fuel filter
clogged.. sometimes caused by water in the fuel.. Have you been
running biodiesel? 2286 do NOT like anything other than pump
fuel. Some people say it's alright, I drive one daily and it
hates fuel that isn't a premium type. Possibly and air leak into
the fuel system? Are all pipes/hoses tight? Any suspect
connection needs to be sealed correctly. Any fuel leaks off the
pump? Any dripping out means air is also getting in. Try again
and report back please!

I serviced it 4 months ago. Been using it as my daily driver so
it has had some pain. Just been off roading in it round Malham
at the weekend and it didn't miss a beat.
It has been black smoky on start up a big cloud of smoke and
when flat out you can see black smoke coming out. But its been
like that for ages so I just kept on going.
Thanks for your reply I will have ago on it after work and look
through what you have suggested.

Check your accelerator linkage and stop cable before you start
undoing big oily bits. Could be a five minute job.
(PS they always sound noisier and smell smellier when you think
they're fucked.)

a couple of times mine has lost power and speed in the past, it
was a simple fix
the loud pedal in the cab had come loose on the shaft and needed
repositioning and tightening properly
this gave me full travel again at both the pedal and injector
pump, so wedge the pedal down and check the pump lever has gone
right to the stop before getting too involved

I had a look over the Landy after work and soon found one
problem.
Good news its still alive, bad news I may have knocked 100 years
off the engines life.
Due to;
No Oil!! It drank 6 pints and has improved engine noise
(surprisingly!!) and is back nearly to where we were.
There is now more engine noise, it seems to be very tappie on
overrun/engine braking.
The oil must be getting burnt off, I see alot of smoke on start
up must be that.
Thanks for your advice, at least shes still going for now.

Failure imminent. The tapping is likely your chain tensioner and
or other things. Get a spare engine ready.

South Yorkshire. I only have partial usable engines here... I
have three new arrivals need inspection, so that's a month away
before I start, at least. The current crop is half split and
none are particularly usable. Do you have a 3 or a 5 bearing
unit in there?
