Flywheel removal question

Hi,do I need to remove the starter before I can get the flywheel
off my 2.25 diesel engine?

I wouldn't have thought so but to be honest I've never found the
need to leave the starter in unless the bolts are seized or
snapped off that hold the starter in place? It would make life a
bit easier to remove the starter and I found you will need to
remove the timing pointer as the flywheel catches on this when
lifting off.
Only picture I have is one with the starter removed..... ::)

I couldn't get the flywheel off until I'd removed the
starter,the timing pointer was already off so I could poke a big
screwdriver in its opening to lever at the flywheel from behind.
Getting the flywheel back in isn't much fun either,with the
gearbox a few inches away hanging from ratchet straps.
