5988 is on the money where the box is concerned.... kinda, the
delivery of the power is very harsh with a tdi, aswell as the
vibrations which transfer through the gears themselves cause
them to chatter and wear much more quickly than the much
smoother 4 cyl petrol
If you drive with alot of mechanical sympathy I dont see any
reason why a gearbox (which bear in mind is at least 30 yrs old
allready) wouldn't last reasonably well, ultimately its your own
right foot which governs how many horses or how much torque you
transfer to the wheels. If you like to scoot up through the
gears as quick as you can , you will go through gearboxes , and
so you might want to think about lpg or another option? If you
can restrain yourself and drive smoothly you can make them last,
and of course you would also get mid to high 30's mpg.
You could allways look at a 6, which are much smoother than a
4....... I'm not sure but I seem to remember Stiggy mentioning
something about his engine being slightly different ? as I say
I'm not sure because he doesn't like to talk about it
............ much

Decisions, decisions. Can't really decide what to do :-\
The issue is I have all the stuff to do it, also have disco
axles converted to leaf springs and can fit 5 speed gearbox etc
but then is it just another hybrid and a bit :gay:
Think I will leave it as close to original as possible for now,
I can always do conversion later and fit it without the turbo (a
la Glencoyne conversion)
Thanks for thoughts and suggestions :smilewide: :smilewide:

I never got anywhere near 30mpg driving a tdi Disco, more like
20! never been heavy right footed,
but if I could get 30 from a tdi in my 109 I'd convert it
tomorrow and drive it everywhere (my modern "daily" only does 30
on a run if driven steadily)

Interesting responses!
My S2a is also 2.25P and I yearn for better fuel economy -
probably only getting 20mpg at best.
I've done very little to help with improving the MPG - save for
the oversize 235/85 tyres and FWH's. The LPG option sounds good,
and of course I'd be interested in fitting an overdrive if I can
get one at a sensible price. Also it appears fitting electronic
ignition may help?
I was impressed with the rag-top truck cab at LATP, which had
the 300tdi conversion with auto box and disc brake conversion.
That would do me fine, but is it still genuinely tax exempt?
What sort of cost is involved in going down the LPG route?

Not sure how much to convert to LPG but DIY kits can be picked
up reasonably Misty was already fitted out with hers It looks
simple enough to do But its getting the mix right thats
difficult i think Bloke at the local garage were i get gas said
two years ago that if you spent 25/30 pounds a week on petrol
you would soon get back the cost of paying out for lpg fitted
professionally Not sure what mpg i get never really filled up
and took her on a long constant run

About £500 to DIY fit a new LPG kit
It's viability depends on local LPG cost vs petrol

Sure if will last if you drive like you have a 2.25 d under the
bonnet, but why fit the TDi to do that
Even using the same power/torque as a TDi the torque fluctuation
of the TDi will wreck the box quicker - life of the components
is directly linked to the fluctuation in stress (which is from
the torque) and well as the basic load

What do you do to your disco  I can't think when in the
last 300k we have ever had less than 30mpg from one, other than
when towing

Can't see any reason that wouldn't legally be tax free - have
you really go a series after all that though

As far as I can see, the major reason to fit a tdi is the
combination of power and economy.
Yes, a 2.25D will do fairly close in MPG terms.
Yes, a 8V has more go.
There is however no other sane option I can think of to get
110bhp and 30mph into a series landrover's engine bay at the
same time.
LT77 conversion to go with it is pretty easy, and I gave all of
£100 for the LT77 that went in mine. You then don't blow up
gearboxes.
LPG is out of the question for me (reasonably local suppliers
non-existant, nearest "in range" (15 miles away) is currently
85.9p/l which doesn't make it competitive against a Tdi no
matter what petrol engine you use).
It's worth remembering too that Tdi's will run on Veg oil
(£1/l).
Thus in running cost terms:
Tdi on veg oil at 35mpg (what you should get from an empty 88"
driven gently") - 12.9p/mile
Good 2.25 on LPG@70p - 14.5p/mile
Tdi on veg oil at 28mpg (about what I get with a lead lined
right boot in a laden 109") - 16.2p/mile
Tdi on DERV at 35mpg (what you should get from an empty 88"
driven gently") - 19.2p/mile
Tired 2.25 on LPG@70p - 19.9p/mile
Tdi on DERV at 28mpg (about what I get with a lead lined right
boot in a laden 109") - 22.7p/mile
Good 2.25 on petrol - 27.9p/mile
Tired 2.25 on petrol - 38.3p/mile
As for is it really a series - of course it is. It's the springs
that count you know ;-)

What is the lt77 conversion? Is this where you end up with
permanent 4WD?
The galv chassis I have acquired comes with parabolics, 200tdi,
gearbox and a shit load of other bits (not to mention the disco
axles converted to leaf springs)
Is the lt77 an easy fit or will I have to chop the chassis about
to fit it
Also to throw into the mix I have just acquired a 2.5 petrol
from a defender, don't have to use it though but nice to have a
spare ;D
Anyone near Durham that has done one & could let me have a
looksy??? :smile1 :smile1

Going LPG you have to think of the whopping great tank you have
to stick somewhere.

Been at Leafers all weekend. I got bored if hearing bloody TDI
engines. Rattly jingly horrible noises, some half fitted, some
done well. For me, a Series isn't about speed. A Series is about
ability. I just returned from Leafers and my heavily laden 109
managed 40mph up Ackworth hill on the 638. Why does anyone need
more power. By far the two best noises of the weekend were
Calum's 6 and Drew's 88 2¼ petrol.
