??? Now I've got my series 3 in the garage for a new chassis
the question is do I convert to 200tdi or leave it as petrol ???
Have never been in a tdi powered motor so have nothing to
       compare the petrol motor with
Discuss..........& be nice to each other :handbag

In all honesty a tdi in a series is what LR should have done
themselves, they go like stink, return 30 plus mpg, and are
ultra reliable....... the only downside is they are pretty noisy
       :-\
I'm struggling to hold back from putting one in Humph, but then
its already a dirty diesel........ if you like your petrols it
might not be for you ???

       Hi
Got a 2.25 petrol in Misty But we run it on LPG Dont get the
same mpg as a Tdi but only 63p a litre so works out more mpg per
       cost of price of diesel/petrol

I replaced my LPG v8 with a 300tdi. Apart from the obvious fuel
saving. Petrol scares the shit out of me. I have a 101 and
the fuel lines go behind you and they go over my electrical
lines which are close to stuff that could chaff. The though of a
spark from that and a slight petrol leak makes my skin crawl.
I would never look back from my derv conversion.

I'd say it depends on how often your gonna use it and how good
is the petrol engine in it at the moment, if your only going to
use it for weekends etc and its a good engine keep it as, where
as if your going to use it everyday Tdi it

       Mines still petrol.
As its not my daily no need to change. It is smoother, quieter,
and more original than a tdi.
How far will the money saved not converting to diesel go on
       extra fuel used?

The Series 3 suffix D box is supposed to be the bestest.

Neither of the gear box's are strong enough,
If you are careful, but they will not last as long as with the
engine ether were designed for (bear in kind the series gearbox
has its origins in a per war rover with less than 30bhp) - but
the TDi's biggest problem is the torque fluctuation and the box
won't cope - it may last 20, 30k miles but it will not be
running trouble free with 100k on the clock, not if used to its
       full potential
The question really is why do you want a TDi
If you want power a V8 pisses all over a TDi and is a much
nicer engine for similar conversion costs (and no more
       difficult)
If you want economy - then yes, they make sense but are you
honestly going to do enough miles to pay for the conversion (and
a ease box rebuild, and fitting an OD and fitting RR diffs,
sound proofing such that its bearable ... Think through he full
       cost before you do it)
If you have a nice series, also consider the substantial
reduction in its value by doing it
Or do you want to follow the "cool kids" crowd, in which case
chuck logic down the drain and fit one anyway
At the end of the day, you have to decide what you want to do
with your land rover, only you know your use, an your
circumstances - me - you won't find a TDi in one of mine, they
have there place, but it isn't a series Land rover
The only exception I would make is a stage 1 , where the vehicle
       can actually handle that power
